Rector of IPB University, Dr. Arif Satria signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in the fields of education, research and community service in the Enhancing Marine Biodiversity Research in Indonesia (EMBRIO) scheme. The signing of the MoU was held on the second day of the 4th EMBRIO International Symposium (EIS) & The 7th International Symposium of East Asia Fisheries and Technologists Association (EAFTA) at the Fave Hotel, Bogor, Tuesday (6/8). The MoU was signed by the Rector of IPB University, Dr. Arif Satria; Rajesh Marotirao Dhere, Swa Sawarkar College India; and Dr. Khong Trung Thang, Ambassador from Nha Trang University, Vietnam, and witnessed by the Dean of the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences of IPB University, Dr. Luky Adrianto.

Dr. Arif Satria in his remarks conveyed the importance of cooperation to face such rapid technological challenges that are full of volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity. He gave an example of Singapore in seeing economic uncertainty, with the change in world trade routes. Singapore prefers to increase its human resources by responding to new curriculum changes rather than improving infrastructure. “Likewise, the current fishery sector must deal with climate change. So we need a strong and flexible collaboration in responding to these uncertainty issues. EMBRIO has invited many participants from ASEAN countries to discuss aquaculture, robotic instruments, maritime industry 4.0, fishery industry 4.0, coral reef ecosystems, and other new technologies,” said Dr. Arif.

Furthermore, the Rector of IPB University delivered the results of the latest study in response to the Industrial Revolution 4.0 era, which illustrated that each country has a map of skills that are needed for its human resources. “Australia, India, and Singapore place critical thinking as a crucial thing, while Japan puts collaboration and communication as important skills. However, all countries always concern on adaptability. ”

Dean of the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences, Dr. Luky Adrianto conveyed that this MoU was part of the EMBRIO’s efforts to enhance regional cooperation. EMBRIO has become one of the research blocks according to national leading research in 2020-2024, thus, regional cooperation is needed. “In the marine context, regional cooperation is needed, at least with Southeast Asian and East Asia countries. This is for supporting the development of science and technology and its sustainability, especially in the field of marine biodiversity.”

IPB requires a broader collaboration. Through the EMBRIO Symposium since 2013, there are six foreign universities that have collaborated with IPB University: James Cook University, National University of Singapore, National Institute of Technology Wakayama College, Memorial University of Newfoundland, Swa Sawarkar College India, and Nha Trang University Vietnam.

EMBRIO is expected to be a means in building a network of cooperation between international scientists and research institutions that want to build collaborative research in Indonesia.

Rajesh Marotirao Dhere, Swa Sawarkar College India expressed his gratitude for being able to collaborate with IPB University. “I hope our students can collaborate on a global scale, be motivated to do joint research and to conduct student exchanges in order to share knowledge,” said Rajesh. Meanwhile, Dr. Khong Trung Thang thanked for inviting Nha Trang University in an effort to face future challenges together, especially those related to aquaculture, fisheries, and marine affairs. “Nha Trang University and IPB University have something in common. This is an important event. We meet many researchers who also try to solve future problems,” he said. (dh/ris/zsp)
