To project post-graduation situation for graduates entering working life, Directorate of Student Affairs and Career Development (Ditmawa PK) IPB University held a vocational school pre-graduation stadium general in Grha Widya Wisuda (GWW) building, Dramaga Campus, Bogor (23/7). Directorate of Student Affairs and Career Development, Dr. Alim Setiawan said that graduating from university is the start of a series of life challenges. The hardest challenge is to compete with other job seekers, which always increases in number. For that purpose, a soft skill and ability to manage themselves is necessary.
“The keys of success in finding jobs or to be a successful entrepreneur are integrity, discipline, ability to interact with other people, support from life partner, and hard work. Besides that, the graduates have to love their job, to have quality as a leader, and to have a good planning so that the results of their work would be satisfiying,” he said.
The Dean of IPB University Vocational School, Dr Arief Darjanto also said that the currently the government has realized the importance of vocational education. A good vocational education is the one which can develop an industrial atmosphere in their educational processes.
“A successful graduate is someone who has high creativity in their work and is able to formulate a solution to solve a problem. The graduate also has to be able to collaborate well with a team, so the results would be satisfactory for everyone. Finally, it is also important to have a good communication in working and cooperating with the others,” he said.
He hopes that the graduates from IPB University Vocational School can keep increasing their capacity to compete in the working world. They should not only depend on employment but has to start creating their own employment.
“Show your contribution and actively participate in agriculture for the development of this nation,” he said.
Besides that, one of IPB University alumni who was present as a speaker was Ir. I Made Donny Moena, owner of Moena Fresh. In his presentation, Donny told his story in building Moena Fresh.
Like what has been done by other successful entrepreneurs, Donny started his business from his parents’ garage. He transformed the garage to a storage for the melons he had planted. Even though the business was not supported by his mother, he kept on striving to prove that he can succeed with the path he had chosen as a fruit farmer. Only after the next 10 year, his mother started to support what he had done.
“So, for IPB University Vocational School graduates who are not yet supported by their family to have a certain business, just prove them that you will succeed someday,” he said.
Donny explained that the key of success for agribusiness is a process to create something new in a creative and innovative manner which can give benefits for people and has an added value. An entrepreneur has to hold on the principle that even the lowest quality items have to have a value.
For example, Donny always utilizes all parts of the fruits he harvests. The lowest-grade and damaged fruits are still utilized for sale.
“Hard work, persistence, and spirit to change are effective weapons to turn a dream to reality. Always pursue your dreams, full of spirit, and be brave to start,” he added.
The Managing Director of Perwiratama Group, Drh. Cecep Mohammad Wahyudin, SH, MH during the same opportunity said that a successful person is the one who plans his/her success. He believes that success is not a matter of luck, but is an outcome of an elaborate plan. A good planning is half of the success, and the benefits will be felt if the plan is applied. However, sometimes one has to be prepared with creativity and innovation in his/her life because there’s always a possibility that we face a situation we aren’t prepared to face. Success starts from ourselves, even though there are always external factors supporting the success.
“Start with the habit of stepping into success and the success is contingent on what we do while looking for job. What we do, say, and think is 90 percent controlled by our habits. Those who can control their habits will be able to control their success. On the other hand, failure also comes from habits. So, flourish the right habits in thinking talking, and doing something with full consideration for better results,” he said.
He added that the key of planning a success is to know how to share our success with the others without splurging our wealth for something worthless. So, if the graduates want to success someday, they have to plan well and work with full of enthusiasm. (Ard)
