Joining Summer Course at IPB Vocational School, Australian, Japanese and French Students Study Sustainable Livestock Farming
Dozens of foreign students and students of IPB Vocational School participated in the Summer Course held by the Vocational School of IPB and Melbourne Polytechnic University, Australia, with the theme ‘Improving the Sustainability of Tropical Animal Production’. The activity was held at the IPB Baranangsiang Campus, Bogor (7-12/4).
There were four speakers presented in this activity, namely Prof. Alain Rival, Regional Director for the Southeast Asian Island Countries-CIRAD, France; Prof. Masakazu Komatsuzaki, Director of Field Science Center – Ibaraki University, Japan; Catherine Kirk from Melbourne Polytechnic, Australia; and Jack Hetherington from Adelaide University, Australia.
In his speech, Deputy Dean of Vocational School of IPB, Dr. Bagus Priyo Purwanto said that through this activity the IPB Vocational School students could improve their language skills and learn culture from Australia, Japan and France. In addition, this Summer Course could also be an opportunity for the Vocational School of IPB to enhance collaboration between universities.
“We hoped that foreign students from Melbourne University, the Netherlands and France as well as our students from Vocational School who took part in this summer course can identify opportunities and challenges of a sustainable livestock system model in the future. The students could also strengthen friendship and improve language skills. Participants could also take credit earning programs. For IPB itself, this activity was an opportunity to increase the number of students and inbound academics to IPB,” he said.
The theme raised was about sustainable livestock farming. According to Dr. Bagus, in other countries, livestock farming is considered as the biggest contributor to global warming. Therefore, Prof. Masakazu in his presentation said that tropical livestock farming must begin with the environmentally-friendly concept. This topic will be a collaboration opportunity between Japan and Indonesia in the future. (Dh/Zul/ZSP)
