IPB Strategic Discussion Reveals Lack of Fish Supply Despite Abundant Stock

Fisheries sector, as one of the powers in achieving food sovereignty, is a recent topic to be discussed. IPB University's Directorate of Scientific Publication and Strategic Information held a Strategic Study with the theme "Sustainable Fisheries Production for Food Sovereignty" in Danau 2 Room, Graduate School of IPB University, Dramaga, Bogor (24/4).

The Director of Scientific Publication and Strategic Information, Dr. Eva Anggraini, said that this program is an effort to arrange a meeting between experts to discuss about strategic issues in agriculture. "We chose this topic to respond to the current development regarding digital technology and bonus demography. Inshaa Allah,we will consistently have discussions like this in upcoming times," she said.

As one of the speakers, the Director of Marine and Fisheries, Ministry of National Development Planning/Head of National Development Planning Agency, Dr. Ir. Sri Yanti delivered the National Medium-term Development Plan (RPJMN) for 2015-2019 period. In that RPJMN, there are several issues to be resolved, such as plastic waste, quality human resource preparation, and productivity issues, especially about efficiency in cultivation business.

Dr. Ir. Luky Adrianto, M.Sc, as the Dean of Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences (FPIK) IPB presented several data about the facts in fisheries condition of Indonesia's seas. "The current problem is our deficient supply of fishes despite rising stock. The rise in fish stock doesn't mean that we can do anything we want. It means that government's approach is still lacking in managing this issue. To increase productivity is to observe the interaction between supply and demand," he said.

In that even also present Dr. Rilus A Kinseng MA, a sociologist who is a lecturer of Department of Communication Science and Community Development, Faculty of Human Ecology IPB University. Dr. RIlus explained about the strategy of fishermen's empowerment and protection. "Whether our fish production is sustainable or not is determined by the actors involved in production processes. The issue in fishermen is that there are many training held but there is no follow up structurally," said Dr. Rilus. (Ard)
