The Institute of Research and Community Service (LPPM) of the IPB University in 2019, increased cooperation with Sukabumi Regency in the Development of the People’s Animal Husbandry School (SPR). “The opening the SPR is the first step in advancing the livestock sector, especially in improving people’s welfare in the Sukabumi area,” said Deputy Head of LPPM of IPB for Community Service, Prof. Sugeng Heri Suseno during a discussion with the Regent of Sukabumi, H. Marwan Hamami at Sukabumi Pavilion, Friday (8/3).

Furthermore, Prof. Sugeng said, LPPM of IPB has a community service program for students, lecturers, and alumni. For students, besides KKN there are also thematic activities such as IPB Goes to Field, SUIJI-SLP, KKN-Kebangsaan, and ASEAN-SLP. “Meanwhile for lecturers and alumni, besides SPR, there are also the Nusantara Agriculture Clinic Program, Agro Creative Field Station (SLAK), Family Empowerment Post (Posdaya), IPB Cyber Extension-Farmer Center, IPB Disaster Care, and Campus Circle Partnership,” said Prof. Sugeng. He said that SPR which is a lecturer and alumni service program aims to educate farmers through public school.

Responding to this, the Regent of Sukabumi, H. Marwan Hamami conveyed that in the Sukabumi Regency area, there is a lot of land that has not been utilized effectively. With this potential, SPR program will be able to develop well and help farmers to improve their business capacity. Marwan will explore this potential through the Animal Husbandry Department. “Hopefully, field school such as the People’s Animal Husbandry School can improve the welfare of the community, especially farmers with the potential that exists in Sukabumi Regency,” said Marwan.

Marwan added, the regional government has tried to encourage the realization of several livestock programs on unused plantation land. One of them is by establishing agro-tourism in which there is a dairy farm. The cooperation in managing the People’s Animal Husbandry School with IPB could be the first step in advancing the livestock sector. Through the SPR, it is expected that in the future Sukabumi Regency can become a center for animal husbandry for beef cattle. Also attending the event was the Chairperson of SPR of LPPM of IPB, Prof. Muladno. (Wd/Awl/ris/ZSP)
