There are thousands of restaurants in Indonesia, but there aren’t many of them who have been certified as halal. The few number of halal-certified restaurants goes back to the fact that restaurant owners are often reluctant to do so because of the time-consuming process. Indonesia itself has the biggest muslim population in the world.

Motivated by that, three students from Sharia Economy Department of Bogor Agricultural University (IPB) designed the prototype of an application named ‘Dering’. This application contains a catalog of halal restaurants and catering services. Currently, Dering has only been designed to provide information around Bogor area.

This platform managed to snatch the first prize of a business plan competition in Padjajaran Islamic Economy Summit (PIES), which was held by Padjajaran University Sharia Economy Student Organization (28-30/8). ‘Dering’ team consists of Deri Siswara, Abi Nuldi Albajii and Hafielda Rasyifa.

‘Dering’ is an acronym of Demand on Catering. This application can help the user to order halal foods. The user can also know halal-certified restaurants. “Dering” can even be the facilitator to provide information about halal certification from Indonesian Ulama Council (MUI) quickly for catering owners.

“The vast number of Indonesian dishes that don’t contain pork doesn’t guarantee that those dishes are halal. This idea was originated from the subject that is learned in the department. This application will shortly be equipped with database,” explained Deri.

In the near future, they will develop ‘Dering’ to reach Jabodetabek area. “We hope to develop this application in Play Store and can help halal food industry in Indonesia with the help of technology,” added Deri. (Ard)
