The Institute for Research and Community Service (LPPM) of Bogor Agricultural University (IPB) conducted a training on Scientific Article Writing for lecturers and post-graduate students at the IPB International Convention Center (IICC), Bogor (15/8). The training participants were provided with techniques and tips about writing articles that can be published in international journals.

Dr. Eva Anggraini, SPi, MSi, Deputy Head of LPPM for Strategic Studies and Scientific Publications, in her remarks informed that there were 276 applicants in this training but only 32 people were selected as participants. "We want to do a training with high quality. Therefore, the number of participants is limited so that there is interaction between participants and resource persons. The participants are expected to prepare questions related to the obstacles faced in writing the article," she said.

Besides that, Dr. Eva suggested the participants to use this opportunity for consultation. In addition, currently IPB has a publication clinic that provides plagiarism check facility, consultation on the substance of articles with the Publication Clinic Committee consisting of scientists from various fields, and a language editing service. It was expected that after this training, participants can immediately complete their manuscripts and submit them to the targeted journals.

"By joining this training, it is expected that there will be many international publication agents from lecturers and students. The aim is to increase the number of IPB international publications. The lecturers are also given publication incentives which submission is integrated with the Credit Score and Scientific Work Assessment System (Sipakaril)," she said.

According to her, IPB wants to build a culture of writing and publication in order to increase the number of IPB lecturers, researchers and students who have international publications and productivity in scientific publications. LPPM will also hold Publiweek activities which contain various publication activities on 24-28 September 2018.

"We know that IPB is heading for World Class University, so there is a need for briefing all IPB academics to understand the tricks and tips for publishing articles in international journals, including the ethics of publication, targeted journals and the process of publication," said the Head of Scientific Publication Division of LPPM of IPB, Dr. Hawis Madduppa, SPi, MSi.

The resource persons in this training were Dr. Habil Sonja Kleinertz, DAAD long term lecturer at the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences (FPIK of IPB), Dr. Berry Juliandi as Chief Editor of Hayati Journal, and Dr. Hawis Madduppa. Training materials were emphasized on logical flow, publication ethics, writing structure, writing techniques, use of reference managers, submission strategies, and communicating with editors and peer reviewers.

"Lecturers and students are usually constrained by manuscripts that are not ready enough for publication. The preparation is usually not good, so the structure of the manuscript does not follow the rules of the targeted journals although the data quality is good. For this reason, through this training, we help the participants on how to prepare the good introduction, abstract, method, and so on. In this training, participants also have the opportunity to consult their manuscripts individually with the resource persons," he added. (dh/ZSP/Zul)
