 In 2018, Department of Family and Consumer Sciences, Faculty of Human Ecology (FEMA) IPB is back to holding International Summer Course Program continuing the last year Summer Course. The 2nd international Summer Course 2018 is still bringing the similar name, that is Family Life Among Agricultural Families in West Java. It is just in this 2nd International Summer Course, the organizer is carrying the special theme of “Household Gardening to Support Family Well-Being”. This Summer Course activity is held on August 25th – September 4th 2018.

Dean of Faculty of Human Ecology IPB, Prof. Dr. Ir. Ujang Sumarwan said, this special theme has been appointed remembering in farmers’ family life, family resources management is one of the essential issues, especially in the optimization of the resources owned by the family. “One of the family resources that can be utilized to improve quality of life is house yard. In optimizing its management, the yard is need to be prepared first, in case of its setting and design, technology of home garden cultivation and the role of family resource management, which is including human resources as the implementer in garden utilization, time resource that is used to manage the garden and financial resource that is used and earned from garden utilization. When all those components are well prepared, the contribution of garden utilization to family well-being will be more optimum. Therefore, in organizing this 2nd International Summer Course, Department of Family and Consumer Sciences, Faculty of Human Ecology (FEMA) IPB together with Departmen of Agronomy and Horticulture (AGH) and Department of Landscape Architecture (ARL), Faculty of Agriculture IPB are collaborating to organize this event,” revealed Prof. Ujang.

Prof. Ujang hopes that organizing this Summer Course can provide knowledge and experiences for student participants to understand more about yard utilization through home gardening and also direct practice on field. This program aims to build inter-disciplines collaboration in internal IPB, also to develop international collaboration network, and certainly to support unit performance in improving the number of inbound students and lecturers at IPB.

Mayor of Bogor City, Dr. Bima Arya in his welcoming speech expressed his highest appreciation to Universiti Putera Malaysia and Seoul National University as partner universities in this program. “Welcome in Bogor City as the first city in Indonesia that is carrying Family Friendly City vision. This Summer Course Program is appointing the similar topic with Bogor City’s vision. I am very welcoming this activity. Family development is the primary vision in realizing the Family Friendly Bogor City, because family development becomes the principle base in creating good quality future people and generation,” said the city’s mayor. In his welcoming speech, he also introduced Sekolah Ibu as one of the main programs in realizing the Family Friendly Bogor City, a city with millions of hopes for its people. The Representative of Companion Lecturers, Dr. Muslihah Hasbullah from Faculty of Human Ecology, Universiti Putera Malaysia was very pleased with IPB and Bogor City hospitality in welcoming the participants of Summer Course Program. In future, Dr. Muslihah hopes that the established collaboration with IPB and Bogor City may be sustained. Program that is funded by Directorate of International Program IPB, is also supported by Government of Bogor City, Government of Cianjur Regency, and Government of DKI Jakarta Province, Danone, and Sangkuriang Lapis Bogor.
