The Women of the Milenial Generation are Capable of Reading Labels Before Purchasing Products
The Department of Family and Consumer Sciences (IKK) of the Faculty of Human Ecology, Bogor Agricultural University (FEMA IPB) held an event called Scientific Forum for Family and Consumer Sciences (IKK) with the title of “ The Current Research on Consumer Behavior in the Perspective of Literature Review” at Jati Room, School of Business, IPB Gunung Gede Campus on Wednesday (5/16). The forum’s main speaker was one of the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences hghly deemed professor, Prof. Ujang Sumarwan.
During this forum, Prof. Ujang presented data based on analysis of consumer behvior throughout Indonesia, starting from eating habits to smoking habits.
“Nowadays, Indonesians spend most of their earnings on food which is still a larger amount than their spendings on anything else, that is as much as 63,87 percent. This proves that Indonesian people still consider food and drinks as quite important. There are 14 food groups/refreshments registered that are often consumed by the Indonesian society which are, grains, tubers, fish/shrimp/squids/shellfish, meat, eggs and milk, vegetables, nuts, fruits, oils and coconuts, beverages, spices, other consumables, pre-made food and beverages, cigarettes and tobacco. As much as 14 percent of their spendings are spent on cigarettes in both the higher economic class of society and the lower economic class. This number is larger than the needed amount of daily protein intake,” Prof. Ujang explained.
Prof. Ujang also explained on the consumerism trends nowadays that the millenial generation are going through. “Many of these trends are caused by various factors such as culture, technology, customs and habits, and also social environment. One of these consumer behavior phenomenons is the habit of reading a label on a product, which is stated in my research by the title “Meta-Analysis Study: Reading Behavior of Food Products Label”, women read more labels due to the reasons of health and curiousity of the nutritional content,” Prof. Ujang stated.
Meanwhile, the Secretary of Family and Consumer Sciences Department of FEMA (Faculty of Human Ecology) IPB (Bogor Agricultural University), Alfiasari SP, M.Si explained that the main goal of this Scientific Forum for Family and Consumer Sciences of Bogor Agricultural University is to socialize learning topics and knowledges that are discussed and researched on in IKK (Family and Consumer Sciences), at the same time to furthermore discuss current research on consumer behaviors in Indonesia.
“Consumer behaviors are a large theory that contain many aspects and approaches to thoroughly discuss these phenomenons of consumer behavior in Indonesia. This second Forum for Family and Consumer Sciences specifically publicates current research on consumer behavior,” Alfiasari stated. (AVR)
