Rector of Bogor Agriculture University (IPB), Dr Arif Satria, delivered a scientific oration at the graduation of State University of Semarang (Unnes) (15/5). Dr Arif raised the theme "Higher Education and Community Transformation in Era 4.0".

In his speech, the rector of IPB discussed four main effects of community transformation in Industrial Revolution 4.0 era, namely Shifting Customer Expectations, Enhanced Products, Collaborative Innovation and New Operating Models (Digital Models).

In addition, Dr Arif also explained the positive trend of information technology in Indonesia from year to year.

"Internet users are increasing. Currently there are 160 million people in Indonesia connected to internet, of which 96 percent is chat apps users, 76 percent is social media users, 55 percent is email users, 21 percent is streaming users, 18 percent is for news portals and 12 percent is for online store," he said.

Rector also mentioned that internet behaviour in Indonesia is dominated by online store (62 percent). And the basic need is changed from the physical need to be communication need.

"The most important new needs in cyber era are battery and wifi. The Industrial Revolution 4.0 is characterized by the development of the internet of/for things. It is followed by new technology in data sciences, artificial intelligence, robotics, cloud, 3D printing and nano technology, which disrupt previous innovations," he added.

With this technology, people can sell everything without having a shop building. People can do taxi business without having a car.

There has been a shift from the concept of ownership to the concept of access. This condition has made the loss of some works. However, in fact this new era has also created various types of new jobs that replace the old ones.

In the United States, there are 3,508 jobs lost but there are 19,263 types of new jobs created. Meanwhile on a global level, there are about 75 to 375 million workers needing to switch their jobs to the new ones with new skills.

"The dynamics of the above changes are increasingly inevitable. But the problem is that the acceleration of technological change is higher than anything, especially culture, public policy, research and education. This is called as cultural lag in sociology, which shows that changes of material culture have not been followed by non-material culture," he said.

According to him, disruption factors not only rely on technological changes due to Industrial Revolution 4.0, but also on changes in demographic structure, climate change, globalization and geopolitical map. Therefore, the strategy of university to face disruption should also pay attention to these factors.

The results of a research conducted by Thomas Stanley showed that there are 100 factors of success in life. If we look back, IQ ranks 21st, studying at a favorite school is the 23rd, and passing with the best score is the 30th.

"Then what is the first factor influencing someone's success? It is honesty. Honesty is the important thing that becomes the pillar of the progress of a nation. The second factor is discipline. How we should be able to think smart, work fast and precisely. And the third is Gaul (Good Interpersonal Skill). I believe Unnes graduates have good interpersonal skills," he said in front of the graduates.

Fourth is the support of the spouse. In choosing a partner, we had better choose a good, conducive, adaptive and visionary partner. Do not look at your spouse today, but look at your spouse in the next 15 years what he/she'll be like. Fifth and sixth are to work harder than others and to love what we do. If you want to get more results, of course you must work more.

"Passion is a very important factor. You have to think to always love the job you get so you will get the job you love. Other significant factors are good and strong leadership, competitive spirit and personality, good life management, and the ability to sell ideas and products. IPB has prepared its graduate candidates with these characters through various integrated activities," he said. (dh/ZSP/zul)
