Student Association of Animal Production Science and Technology Bogor Agricultural University (IPB) held a Livestock Workshop and Business Model Canvas Competition (BMC). Located at the Auditorium of Janes Humuntal Hutasoit (JHH), Faculty of Animal Husbandry (Fapet) IPB, this seminar aimed to "Increase Knowledge of Livestock Prospect to General Public especially Pre Retirement with Basic Agribusiness of Animal Husbandry" (28/4).
The event was attended by about 120 people from various circles namely IPB students, external students and the public.
The seminar discussed prospects, opportunities and business practices of livestock in the field. The experts and practitioners in the field of animal husbandry who attended as a guest speakers were Dr. Sri Rahayu (Lecturer of Fapet IPB), Budi Susilo Setiawan (Owner of MT Farm), Subarkah and Ahmad Anwari (Bekasi Cricket Farmers).
A successful breeder who is an alumnus of IPB, Budi Susilo Setiawan in his presentation said that the problems faced by Indonesian farmers is the fluctuating quality of livestock products. In essence, the entrepreneur must be good in every business. Budi felt a lot of blessing in his efforts in the world of farming. From farming, this alumnus of IPB Fapet even now have catering business, property and agrotourism.
"Whatever business we are going to do, simply hold on to four things namely believe that this effort is a good thing, try to optimize, add knowledge and patience. Livestock students should have livestock or able to at least sell livestock. Business is realistic rather than idealistic. When cheaper imported carcasses become threat to breeders, we must move quickly, "said Budi.
Dr. Sri Rahayu explained about the development of sheep goat farming (Kado) in Indonesia. Starting from the prospect of livestock, Kado population, the excellence of livestock Kado, deny the negative stigma about high cholesterol in kado meat and compare the livestock raising system in Indonesia and in other countries (Australia and New Zealand).
Aside from goats and sheep businesses, participants also get knowledge about the business of crickets. Business crickets are still not popular in the community. Whereas it has high market demand, does not require a large investment in starting a business and can be done in a narrow place.
The short time harvesting process (only about 22 days) makes the cattle business potential to be developed.
"We should have knowledge in raising crickets, understand condition of crickets market, make the right cage, good feed management and conduct routine control. The biggest risk of crickets’ livestock business is predator attack because it can reduce the number of crickets that can be harvested or in the process of nesting. However, with the right treatment this can be anticipated, "said Anwari and agreed by Subarkah.
On this occasion, the 1st winner for Business Model Canvas (BMC) competition is IPB Plant Protection Department (PTN) students. The team consists of Natassa Kusumawardani, M. Gagah Saptarengga, Rima Wulansari and Melinda Agustina producing "criquet cakes", delicious cake made from cricket powder. (TK)
