The Association of Professions Student (Himpro) on Ornithologi and Poultry of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, of Bogor Agricultural University (FKH IPB) organized vaccination training and necropsy on chicken. The purpose of this training was to improve the ability of the participants in providing vaccines and necropsies as well as handle the blood collection of animals, especially chickens. This annual event was carried out at FKH IPB, IPB Campus, Dramaga, Bogor, on 15 April 2018.

"In addition to the forum to train the softskill and hardskill of the participants, the training course was also utilized as the media to establish cooperative networks among participants as prospective veterinarians, as well as trainees to work together in a team," said Rizki Ferdi.

Vaccines for chickens have been developed to improve the death rates, create herd immunity, and to reduce the potential transmission of diseases among chickens crammed together in a small space in the commercial sector, and not necessarily for the common backyard flock. There are two types of administration techniques of vaccines, through drinking water or eye drops. The benefits of vaccines in chickens are to improve the chicken immunity, to reduce the chance of certain disease attacks, to prevent the occurrence of a disease of the given type of vaccine, and to increase chicken endurance. Vaccinations enhance immunity to birds, or at least some. Most vaccinations provide full immunity to birds where if they are exposed to the disease, they will get no illness. That's why good vaccinations are needed.

The second briefing was on the necropsy procedure for chicken.  An important role of necropsy is in the affirmative effort of diagnosis which will certainly be important information as a prospective veterinarian. Veterinarians regularly perform necropsies on livestock in order to determine whether the cause of death is due to sickness or other environmental factors that may affect the rest of the livestock.

Necropsy, a postmortem examination or autopsy, is the procedure of necropsy is a form of disease identification. Necropsy is a dissection of a dead animal to determine the cause of death. In essence, it is an autopsy performed on an animal.  Necropsies can help us learn more about the biology of an animal, how it is affected by disease or how human interactions may impact animals. Necropsy (post-mortem surgery) chicken is a procedure that can be used by veterinarians or chicken owners to find out the cause of death from chickens.

"There are several important points in ante-mortem examination such as behavioral living, posture, eyes, nails, and body condition. By using a knife or scissor, one can perform basic necropsy for the purpose of obtaining diagnostic information, samples for laboratory examination, chicken blood collection or to ensure the quality of the chicken," he said.

The next item of the program of the training course was the practical works on vaccination and necropsy on the chicken. We understand that poor administration is the most common cause of vaccine failure in poultry. Planning and attention to detail resulting in better administration will improve disease control and therefore economic performance of poultry. The course provided participants necessary actions to learn appropriate methods for necropsy and administration techniques of vaccinations on chickens.
