The Effect of Torbangun Drinks A la IPB Decreases Premenstrual Syndrome Complaints of Teenagers
During menstruation, some teenagers feel premenstrual syndrome or PMS with symptoms such as abdominal cramps, breast pain, mood swings, anxiety, which can lead to the decrease of appetite due to illness. There are several factors suspected to be the cause of the syndrome, among which are hormonal fluctuations and prostaglandin production.
Three researchers from the Department of Community Nutrition, Faculty of Human Ecology (Fema) Bogor Agricultural University (IPB) namely Astri Ayu Novaria, Hardinsyah and Muhammad Rizal Martua Damanik conducted research on torbangun functional drinks in reducing the level of complaints and prostaglandin levels in adolescents with premenstrual syndrome.
"Hormonal fluctuation in premenstrual syndrome is an imbalance between the estrogen and the progesterone hormone where there is an excess of estrogen or low progesterone in the menstrual cycle that causes the formation of prostaglandins in large quantities. If prostaglandins are released in excessive amounts into the blood circulation, then there will be systemic effects such as diarrhea, nausea and vomiting, "said Rizal Damanik.
This study aims to analyze the influence of torbangun functional drinks against PMS symptoms and prostaglandin levels in adolescents. A total of 12 adolescents as the subjects in this study were divided into two treatment groups, i.e. groups with torbangun functional drinks and control groups without torbangun functional drinks.
The preparation of torbangun functional drinks was carried out using the formula among others 20 gram of fresh torbangun leaf, cooking water 306 ml, 8 gram of lemon juice as flavor and aroma in drinks and addition of honey. Addition of honey is used as a substitute for sugar, since sugar consumption can increase complaints of premenstrual syndrome.
Based on the results, the team found that the mean decrease of PMS complaint rate occurred in the treatment group with torbangun functional drinks. While in the control group, the complaint rate was not significantly decreased.
They also explained that subjects with torbangun functional drinks experienced significant decrease in prostaglandin levels (580.6 pg / dl), whereas in the control treatment it was not significantly decrease (300.3 pg / dl). The tests conducted by this team showed that the values ??before and after treatment between the two groups was significantly different with prostaglandin levels. Torbangun functional drinks can be an alternative to reduce PMS symptoms and prostaglandin levels. (TK)
