Scientific Writing Techniques for Students and Faculty members of the Department of Management IPB by German Expert

The Department of Management, of the Faculty of Economics and Management of Bogor Agricultural University (FEM IPB), again invited the international guest lecture to offer an international lecturer on "Writing the International Journal: Strategies and Techniques", on 9 December 2017. The event which took place at IPB Campus, Baranangsiang, Bogor,  presented Professor Hermann Waibel of Leibniz University of Hannover, Germany. Chairman of the Department of Management of FEM, Dr. Mukhamad Najib, stated that the international guest lecture program is have been commonly carried out by the Department. "In a year we invite about ten academicians from universities abroad for knowledge sharing," he said.

This special event was carried out in order to realize IPB as a World Class University, to provide IPB students to learn and get experiences to attend international lecturer by foreign lecturer. The students won’t be left behind on the development of science occurs in other countries, especially in developed countries. In addition, the event provided opportunities for students to improve their confidence to interact with the international scientists, at the end they are expected to establish network them.

In this special event, the international  guest lecturer presented “Writing  Techniques” as how to write scientific articles for international journals. It is required by IPB, that students of both  master and doctoral degree program must publish their article in reputable scientific journals. Publication is a must for them to be qualified for their final comprehensive exam.

Dr. Najib said writing article to be accepted in the reputable journals is not an easy process. Therefore, lecturers and students need to keep practicing, increasing their capacity in scientific writing. "Writing in international journals for an academician of graduate students is not just for their eligibility to be qualified for comprehensive exams or for their promotion for their higher ranks. But more than that, is part of the effort to socialize ideas, research findings and new knowledge for the scientific community. For a Muslim, spreading useful knowledge is also part of a charity that is worth a reward, "he explained.

The seminar was attended by 120 (hundred twenty) students of both the master degree (S2) and doctoral degree program (S3) and faculty members of various universities in Jabotabek and Bandung. Prof Waibel explained, that writing is not an instant process, especially writing in international journals. Therefore it takes constant practice and hard work without feeling frustration.

Prof. Waibel also provided tips on how to write in reputable international journals. According to him, in addition to depart from research results or scientific evidence and will  have clear contribution to the field of study. It is suggested that the author should invite colleagues or  academicians from other countries as the second author.

"Start submitting the manuscript to the medium level reputable journals first. Do not submit directly to high impact journals, if your proposal is rejected it will be frustrated. Focus your article on your specialty to enhance the scientific understanding of quality improvement of the scientific world, and try to write together with academicians from other countries. This will give its own weight, because that means our writing is the result of cross-country academic thinking, "said Prof. Waibel.

According to Dr. Najib, as the follow-up action of the seminar, Training Course on “Scientific Writing” for reputable international journals will be planned. In addition,  mentoring programs for faculty members and students who already have manuscripts ready to be submitted for  international journals. "We are trying to provide facilities for students and faculty members to publish their manuscripts in reputable international journals. Among others, we plan to develop a kind of mentoring program and assistance in improving the quality of writing, both substantially and in language, "he concluded. (Wied)
