One Day University Program at FMIPA IPB, to Provide High School Students Experience Sensation Lecture in the Higher Education
A total of 2,300 high school students from Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Tanggerang, Bekasi, Sukabumi, and Cianjur (Jababodetabek-Suci) had been given the opportunity to attend One Day University Program at Bogor Agricultural University (IPB), on Saturday, 19 August 2017. It was really a good experience for them to have such opportunity. The One Day Lecture at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) of IPB is one of a serial activities for the 35th Anniversary of FMIPA IPB.
During which those students were invited to attend classes for lectures and did the practicum works as regularly practiced by regular students.
Surprisingly, the program was highly demanded and were welcome by schools around Jababodetabek-Suci. FMIPA IPB had put the quota that would only accept maximum 2000 students, but the more than 9 thousand students applied for such good opportunity. Finally, FMIPA IPB decided to accept 7 (seven) students from each school, instead of 35 (thirty five) students as decided previously.
"In the D-Day, the total participants have reached around 2,300 (two thousand three hundred) students. There are even schools that bring two-bus of students, though the quota for each school is limited to seven students. Finally, we asked the Legal Bureau, Promotion and Public Relations of IPB to assist us to organize campus tour for students who are not registered in the planned program, but they have arrived in the location, "said Chairman of the Organizing Committee, Dr. Ence Darmo Jaya Supeno.
According to Dr. Ence, the objective of the “One Day University Program” was to give opportunity and real pictures of university life in FMIPA IPB. Many students perceive that IPB subjects are confined to agricultural cultivation. Through this program students will learn and understand clearly the subject coverage being offered by IPB, they are agriculture in a broad sense.
On this special program, in addition to provide opportunity for High School students to sit in the classes the regular students usually attend for lecture, FMIPA IPB also organized a half-day workshop for the teachers. This core activity of this program was focused on the introduction of Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Science of Bogor Agricultural University in more detail, particularly the selection system to admitted into IPB.
Students seem enthusiasm in attending the teaching and learning process in the classroom as well as in the practical works. They were given opportunities to attend at least four lecture sessions and practicum works. Each session consisted of each subject offered by FMIPA IPB. The subjects selected for this special course were: Statistics, Geophysics and Meteorology, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Biochemistry, and Actuarial. It is expected that program will encourage prospective students from the invited high schools who interested to pursue their higher learning program will FMIPA IPB won’t take the wrong choice. As explained by Dr. Ence some students had made wrong choice into FMIPA IPB.
"We hope the present program will attract more qualified prospective high schools students come to be admitted into FMIPA IPB. We still lacks scientists in all subject, therefore we depend on foreigners. Start from here, students who really interested to be admitted into IPB, will channelized into its appropriate expertise needed to develop our country, "said faculty member of the Department of Biology, FMIPA IPB.
