Five Students of IPB Joined the Winter Course in Australia

Bogot Agricultural University (IPB) had long established the cooperation with several universities in Australia. One of them was the cooperation of Faculty of Animal Husbandry (Fapet) of IPB with School of Animal Sci and Vet Science of Adelaide University.

The cooperation program which was in the form of sending the students of IPB to join the activity of 17 days of Winter Course (23 June-10 July 2017) in several universities in Australia and participated in the race of the International Collegiate Meat Judging (ICMJ). There were five students of Faculty of Animal Husbandry selected to join this activity. They were Hamza Nata Siswara, Melfa Andraini Agatha, Yuni Nuraifah, Dei Gustifah K, and M.Sirajatun Kurniawan.

“This program aims to provide the opportunities and the experiences to us, the students of Fapet of IPB in the field of the animal husbandry that has the weight of 3 SKS. This activity is carried out in various states in Australia such as Darwin (Northern Territory) and Katherine, Adelaide, Adelaide University Roseworthy S.A, and Wagga Wagga, NSW,” said Hamza.

According to Hamza, before departure to Australia, they were required to be apprenticed in the Slaughterhouse (RPH) of Elders of Fapet of IPB. This activity was very useful for them as the initial information about the meat production process and the International Beef Industry before they followed the race.

“In addition to the Winter Course, it will also participate in the race of ICMJ, so this apprenticeship activity is very necessary as a provision for us to increase the knowledge and to improve the students’ skills in assessing the meat. Some of the activities given during the training are the introduction of the cattle slaughtering process, the carcass handling, the storage of the carcass in the chiller, the deboning process, the packing and repacking processes, as well as the introduction of the retail cut and the primal cut on the beef,” he added.(Zul)
