IPB Provided Coaching Services for Cattle Farmers of Sekolah Peternakan Rakyat (SPR) Bojonegoro
IPB assigned facilitators as coaching for farmers of Sekolah Peternakan Rakyat (SPR Animal Farming School) Bojonegoro, and the facilitators will stay for 4 months there. The first coaching session will be implemented in SPR Tunas Barokah, Soko Village, Temayang Subdistrict, for 1 and half months. Later they will move to SPR Mega Jaya, Ngantru sub-village, Sekaran Village, Kasiman Subdistrict, for another 1 and half months. Finally they will move to SPR Maju Bersama, in Sidorejo and Drokilo Villages, Kedungadem Subdistrict. In addition for coaching program for those three SPR areas, the facilitators are scheduled to provide consultation services to motivate farmers to develop their livestock farming, to be independent and prosperous, as well as to provide media for exchange of experiences, and provide information on animal science applicable for social farming in the community. The facilitators in providing their services planned to visit those three SPRs and live the villages.
Various programs were planned by facilitators for their 4-month coaching programs. Included in their programs were mentoring students to carry out their program on IPB Goes To Field (IGTF) 2016, the IPB Safari Clinic Nusantara, Livestock Contest in Bojonegoro, SPR National Workshop on “Sinergi Empat Sekawan dalam Membangun Kemandirian dan Kedaulatan Peternak” ("Synergy of Four Friends in Building Independence and Sovereignty of Dairy products”), and Mentoring of SPR's internal activities. Resulted of the coaching programs among others, farmers began to apply new skills and innovation in the production of feeds such as how to process concentrate fermentation, silage, straw ammonization, nutrient-rich supplement (SKN) or commonly known as forage concentrate. The biogas production from a cheap raw material of cow dung, and manure fermentation. The last product, the fermented manure, has already been marketed by SPR Maju and Kedungadem. SPR Mega Jaya of Kasiman, also began to collect cow urine in containers for fertilizer. The use of urine fertilizer initially was limited to fertilize the farmland of farmers. However, with the development of cattle stalls, the trading of liquid manure of cow urine has begun. Thus, the cattle waste can be utilized and improve the social economic status of farmers.
Related to the cattle sales, such program cannot be carried out by one SPR’ door. It is due to the condition that each farmer raise their cattle individually and they sell their livestock directly to the market. Moreover, the limited budget of SPRs, they are unable to buy farmer’s cattle for collective sales. With the synergy of four friends from Academicians, Businessmen, Government, and Community (ABGC) in Bojonegoro Regency, they are expected to have opportunity to be able to cut out many middlemen in the supply chain so that the selling price of cattle can be increased, profitable for farmers.
For the socio-economic development, each SPR’s has its own potential in depending on the characteristics of their natural conditions. SPR Tunas Barokah develops Ongole (PO) Cattle Breeding Farm. Almost every house in Soko village, Temayang district, owns 1 – 3 cows in their houses. The total number of cows of 6 (six) sub-villages recorded under the SPR is 821 (eight hundred twenty one) cows.
SPR Mega Jaya is in Ngantru Sub-village, Sekaran Village, Kasiman District, Bojonegoro Regency. This SPR develops nursery farms for Peranakan Ongol (PO – Obngoloe breeds). Almost every house in Ngantru village, Sekaran village has 1 – 3 cows in their his houses. The total number of livestock per August 2016 in this sub-village is 689 (six hundred eighty nine) cows. However, one problem area in which SPR has initiated for cattle development is failure rates of artificial insemination. Previously, 100 (hundred) of Brahman crossed cows had been donated by Indonesian Cattle Breeding (ICB) for SPR Mega Jaya.
One of the assets owned by SPR Mega Jaya is the kiosk for SPR members, it was established under the cooperation of SPR with universities (IPB). The other assets are organic vegetable and forage gardens. Cattle manure is the only fertilizer used for these gardens. In addition IPB coaching programs, the SPR Mega Jaya also supported by the New Zealand embassy for the development of its water installations and simple biogas processes.
The coverage area of SPR Maju Bersama is the developmental areas for simental and limousin cattle fattening, which is familiarly called red cow. This SPR is located in Sidorejo Village, Kedungadem District, Bojonegoro Regency. Most farmers of SPR Maju Bersama have a cow at least 2 cows and even dozens of cows. As of August 2016, the total number of livestock in the SPR Maju Bersama is about 1237 (one thousand two hundred thirty seven) cows. For the management aspect of SPR Maju Bersama, it can be classified to be experienced SPR. The feed management is more advanced compare to other SPRs, it has started to produce fermentation concentrate and selling its products to the surrounding community. (Wied)
