Public Lecture by Coordinating Minister for Maritime of RI in IPB
Coordinating Minister for Maritime RI, Gen. (ret) Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan delivered a public lecture to students of Bogor Agricultural Institute (IPB), Thursday (2/3) at the Auditorium Andi Hakim Nasution, Darmaga Campus, Bogor. The theme of his lecture was "Maritime for the Sovereignty of the Nation".
Rector of IPB, Prof. Dr. Herry Suhardiyanto said that maritime is a core competency of IPB and should continue to be developed. According to him, besides being strong in agriculture, IPB is also strengthening innovation in the field of fisheries and marine, various innovations in the form of policies and technology as well as the development of marine science.
IPB has contributed to the preparation of the National Document of Ocean Policy, the national policy in the field of fisheries management with an ecosystem approach (EAFM), policies to improve the quality of human resources for marine and fisheries in Management of Aquatic Conservation Area, Aquaculture, Fishing Engineering, Technology of Utilization Aquatic Bioresources, Marine Biology, Marine Instrumentation and others.
On this occasion, Rector expressed his gratitude and appreciation that IPB can be a part in any decision-making. According to him, in making every decision, the decision makers should rely on strong science and valid data.
"Spirit and maritime perspective should be growing and flowing in all the hearts of the nation children. Attitudes and activities should reflect the behavior with the principles of maritime. For this reason, maritime development should not proceed only with the principle of sustainability in terms of leadership and economy," said Rector.
In his lecture, Coordinating Minister for Maritime asserted that education is the key word. As someone who is grown up with the red beret, he believes in a teamwork. According to him, education is not enough. Another key is the heart and teamwork.
Further, he said, Indonesia has the potential to become a major maritime country in the world because of its strategic location. The government's priority in the field of maritime in 2017 is the destructive rubbish in Indonesian seas. "Waste is an issue of the present government. Indonesian marine tourism is also disturbed by the amount of garbage. Not only that, other issues are transportation and logistics, mandalika tourism to Borobudur and Lake Toba, marine and fisheries, energy and mineral resources. Therefore, the vision of IPB already fits the needs of Indonesia to reduce the gap and strengthen economic growth and economic sustainability in the long term. (Mtd)
