ITK-IPB Develops a Curriculum of Marine Study Program of Marine Polytechnic, Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries

Marine and fishery resources are abundant in Indonesian waters and must be managed properly by skilled personnel. This was raised in the meeting held on May 20, 2016 by the Education Center of Marine and Fisheries, Human Resources Development and Empowerment of Marine and Fishing Community, Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, RI.
 
To generate a formidable skilled human resource at sea, the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries plans to establish 10 Marine Polytechnic spread throughout Indonesia. In the near future the Marine Polytechnics in Bone and in Karawang will be officially inaugurated. Present in the meeting were the officials and staff of the Education Center of Marine and Fishery in the Ministry including the Directors of the Marine and Fisheries Polytechnics of Sidoarjo, Bitung and Sorong. Acting as a resource person in the meeting about the curriculum design was Dr. Henry M. Manik of the Department of Marine Sciences and Technology (ITK) of Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences (FPIK), Bogor Agricultural University (IPB) and Dr. Bambang of Marine Science Program (IK) of Diponegoro University, Semarang.
 
Dr. Henry M. Manik, who is also Chairman of ITK Study Program, FPIK-IPB, described the structure of the curriculum, learning outcomes (learning outcomes), the graduates profile based on the tracer studies, and data on labor requirements in the marine field (labor market), both domestically and abroad.  ITK Study Program has also received an international accreditation from the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science, and Technology (IMarEST) UK, said Dr. Henry, who is also coordinator of the International Accreditation of IMarEST. This is very helpful in the competitive world of jobs, especially in the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC).
 
In setting up the Study Program of Marine and Fishery Polytechnic, it is necessary to identify natural resources including regional potential, human resources, and physical resources (hardware and software). Dr. Henry also described the concept of Indonesian National Qualification Framework (KKNI) to design the curriculum of Marine Study Program for the Polytechnic in in Ministry. 
 
In the discussion session, Dr. Moch Nurhuddah, A.Pi, M.Sc, who is also Head of Education Center of Marine and Fishery of the Ministry mentioned the need for labor market, action plan, what competencies required in the workforce, and public hearings related to the formation of the Marine Study Program. *** (Mtd)
