Study Center of Biopharmaca of IPB Held the Herbal Symposium

Coinciding with the commemoration of 52nd Dies Natalis of Bogor Agricultural University (IPB), Study Center of Biopharmaca (PSB), Institute for Research and Community Service (LPPM) of IPB, held The Third International Symposium on Temulawak and Potential Plants for Herbal Medicine. The event themed “Harmonization of Science, Technology and Culture of Temulawak and Potential Plants Utilization to Accelerate Herbal Medicine Industrialization”, was held in IPB International Convention Center, Bogor, Wednesday (2/9). 
 
Chairman of the organizer, Prof.Dr. Ietje Wientarsih, in her speech conveyed that the event was held in order to disseminate the development of Science and Technology to align with the herbal industry, especially temulawak as the very potential herb. Besides, this event was as the arena to cultivate back the herbal drink for the people of Indonesia and also the world.  
 
This symposium event was attended by around 110 participants consisting of researchers, policy makers, government institutions, entrepreneurs and farmers who were very concerned in terms of cultivation, post-harvest technology, and bioactive. Besides, there were 13 speakers coming from Indonesia, Japan, Pakistan, Malaysia, Australia and USA. In this event, it was also conveyed 32 oral presentations and 56 poster presentations coming from Indonesia.
 
Deputy of Health Improvement Coordination, Dr.dr.H. Tubagus Rachmat Sentika, represented Coordinating Minister of Human and Culture of RI, welcomed the activity which was held by PSB LPPM IPB. ”In terms of culture, the presence of herb can also become culinary, cosmetic and welcome day etc. The popularity of the national herb should continue to increase. The development of materials must also continue to be made,” he said.
 
The same thing was conveyed by Staff of Ministry of Research Technology and Higher Education of RI, Harry Purwanto, MSc, who said that his Ministry welcomed this event. According to him, this was very relevant to the need of research and technology with the focused area of pharmaceuticals. Admittedly, at the moment the temulawak production increased of 15 percent in the main product of horticulture of Indonesia. But the challenge was that temulawak could be like Korean ginseng. 
 
It was emphasized that the traditional herb should have the quality in order to control the market. This could be done with the improvements in terms of innovation. Researches anywhere could be downstreaming, so they could be encouraged to develop the industry. 
 
This symposium activity was held in collaboration of IPB with Ministry of Coordinator for Economic Affairs of RI, Ministry of Coordinator for Human Development and Culture of RI, Agency for Food and Drug Administration (BPOM) of RI, Ministry of Agriculture of RI, Association of Traditional Healers of Indonesian Potion, Ministry of Health of RI, and Ministry of Industry of RI.(dh)
