Preventing Animal Disease Transmission, FKH IPB Conducts Animal Vaccination
To prevent the transmission of animal diseases to humans, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Bogor Agricultural University (FKH-PB) with Animal and Fish Health Center of Region VI, Office of Animal Husbandry and Fisheries (Disnakkan), Bogor Regency, on Monday (11/11) conducted animal vaccination in the villages around the campus.
A total of 210 birds in RT 02 RW 07 of Ciomas Ledeng Village, Ciomas District, Bogor Regency were vaccinated with Avian Influenza (AI). The vaccine used was inactivated AI virus of H5N1 in emulsified oil. Each bird was given 0.3 ml vaccine. Vaccination was also done to the rabies-transmitting animals such as cats and dogs. Unfortunately, many cats were found there to be pregnant.
A veterinarian of FKH-IPB, DVM Elly said, to prevent unwanted cases, pregnant cats were not vaccinated as pregnant cats require in-depth examination prior to vaccination.
Head of the Veterinary Service of IPB, DVM Chaerul Basri M.Epid said that the veterinary service by IPB is new in this year, considering the whole of Indonesia has not been free of bird flu.
Bogor Regency had long been free of rabies. But this is prevention as Chaerul added, a few months ago there was a case of an IPB campus resident biten by a dog from outside the campus. ” Bogor Regency still had to be vigilant because it is surrounded by rabies endemic areas such as Cianjur and Sukabumi,” said Chaerul.
In addition to vaccination, 59 co-assistant students and ten lecturers of FKH IPB also gave worm drugs to cattle, vaccines for New Castle Disease (ND), vitamins, and disinfection to poultry cages. They were divided into five groups for five districts of Bogor Regency, namely Tenjo Laya, Dramaga, Ciomas, Taman Sari, and Ciampea. This is a follow-up activity after the Saturday (9/11) extension to the villagers.
FKH IPB also performed another service in the form of sacrificial animal handling. The Operator of Puskeswankan of Region VI, Office of Animal Husbandry and Fisheries, Bogor Regency, Teni Dwi Noviani, said there are still cases of bird flu in Bogor. Although only one or two, poultry in Bogor area are more frequently exposed to Newcastle disease. Disnakkan itself does not set a target or the number of animals to be vaccinated.
He said the rabies vaccination program has been running since last month. This is also a routine vaccination by Disnakkan of Bogor Regency.
Education and socialization to the public that rabies also attack apes, monkeys, dogs and cats are also continously conducted. This is one reason why masked monkeys are not permitted in Jakarta. ”We are also anticipating the masked monkeys coming from Jakarta.
