Most of Our School Libraries Are Lack of Library Facilities

As many as 95 percent of the 200 thousand school libraries do not have adequate facilities and infrastructure.This statement was stated by Chief of Standardization and Documentation Center, of the Indonesian Standardization Body, Ir. Abdul RahmanSaleh. MSc in the national seminar on Library and Archiveswith the theme ‘Accreditation and Standardization of Library and Archival Institutions in the Era of Open Access Based Information Technology’, held at the International Convention Center- InstitutPertanian Bogor (IPB), on Wednesday, 6 November 2013.
 
Further, Mr.Rahman said that out of 130 thousand schools in Indonesia, only 18 percent which are equipped by libraries though we are now in the open access era. This condition is really great challenges for us librarians and other information professionals in Indonesia, he said.
 
In his remarks, Rector of IPB, Prof. HerrySuhardiyantostated that  library services should educate the community at large. "So far, most of our library collection are of  physical collections. We need progressive change in our library systems, especially the library  service. We must prepare ourselves to be the credible and accountable institution. "However, according to Rector, the most important of all is the reading habits of our students. To facilitate the access of information, we have to transfer our data collection into the online system. Moreover, the users education especially promoting reading habits to the community is necessary. This special event was held by UPTPerpustakaan (Technical Implementation Unit – Library of IPB), and was attended by about 260 participants of various institutions throughout Indonesia.(Wied).
