Department of Plant Protection, Faculty of Agriculture, Bogor Agricultural University (IPB) and Department of Population Ecology, Faculty of Life Sciences, University of Vienna, Austria hold together a field lecture on ‘Introduction to Tropical Ecology and Biodiversity Analysis’ in the Krakatau Islands. This was said by the Staff of Department of Plant Protection, Faculty of Agriculture, IPB, Dr. Damayanti Buchori, MSc, Monday (9/9) in Darmaga campus of IPB while accompanying a team of students from the University of Vienna, Austria.

"The educational cooperation of Bogor Agricultural University and University of Vienna aims firstly to give Indonesian and Austrian students the opportunity to get on-filed lectures of fauna existing in western Java. This fauna is a representative of tropical ecosystems. The second is to learn how to perform a rapid assessment of biodiversity through some taxa (groups of living things) such as birds and butterflies. The third is to learn how to analyze the data that have been gathered together," said Dr. Damayanti accompanied by Chairman of the Department of Plant Protection, Faculty of Agriculture, IPB, Dr. Abdjad Asih Nawangsih.

Surveys will be conducted in four islands of Krakatau (Child of Krakatau, Rakata, Sertung, and Panjang), on the island of Peucang and around Cidaun, Ujung Kulon National Park. Further, birds and butterflies will also be surveyed on Sebesi island.

"We are pleased to work with IPB to conduct these on-field studies (summer courses) on the Krakatau Islands. Indonesia has so much and unique biodiversity, especially tropical microorganisms. It’s very challenging to our students, "said Prof. Dr. Konrad Fiedler of the Department of Population Ecology, Faculty of Life Sciences, University of Vienna, Austria.

Prof. Anas Miftah Fauzi, IPB Vice-Rector for Research and Cooperation said in his speech that IPB has so far worked together on organizing summer courses with a variety of researchers and international universities. "Some examples are those courses on the field of marine with the Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences, IPB and the summer course with the University of Gottingen, Ibaraki University, University of Tokyo, Chiba University and so on, "said Prof. Anas. This collaboration is important to introduce mutually local culture, knowledge and ingenuity to the world. (Mtd)
