Bogor Agricultural University (IPB) again officially established its three Professors on Saturday (6/7) in Dramaga Campus of IPB, Bogor.   The three professors are Prof. Dr. Ir Dewi Apri Astuti, MS, a Professor of Nutrition and Feed Technology, Faculty of Animal Science, who delivered her speech, entitled "Effort in Improving Efficient Utilization of Energy from Tropical Livestock in the Face of Global Warming ".

The professor of Agronomy and Horticulture, Faculty of Agriculture, Professor Slamet Susanto on the same occasion presented his scientific oration entitled "Pamelo: Potential Orange that is Still Neglected ".

Meanwhile, Professor Kukuh Murtilaksono, of Soil Science and Land Resources, Faculty of Agriculture, delivered his scientific speech entitled "Harmonization of Watershed Management in Indonesia ".

In her scientific speech, Prof Dewi Astuti Apri offers a solution in an effort to increase the efficient utilization of energy from tropical cattle through the suppression of heat loss in several ways.
For example, firstly, it is the use of energy-intensive solid feed rich in soluble carbohydrates or fat source fed to cattle. The second is the use of a low fiber feed by giving legume forage of optimal dose at night of a more comfortable temperature.

Third, it is done by paying attention to the need for extra energy of cattle grazing during the day and ensuring an appropriate animal welfare for cattle grazing such as providing protection in the form of shade trees in the grazing field. The fourth is by attending to the temperature and humidity conditions of the cage with a comfortable air circulation as well as livestock density to facilitate the dissipation of body heat.

Meanwhile, Prof. Slamet Susanto described the existence of Pamelo orange, which is still unnoticed or neglected because it is not yet known.   He says, in the international market, Pamelo is a type of citrus having a high trade value beside grapefruit, mandarin orange, and lemon.   ”Pamelo consumers have a wide range of differences in terms of age, social class, educational level and geography," he said.

According to Professor Slamet, Pamelo orange is potential for development because of its unique characteristics: large, a fresh flavor and a long shelf life of up to four months.   "Pamelo also has some cultivars only in Indonesia," he said.

Next, Professor Kukuh Murtilaksono discussed the flood problem in Jakarta that often happen, and even become a five-year routine.

Kukuh said that in the integrated management of the watershed, it is important that the commitment or agreement of the stakeholders that have been made must be consistently applied without having to prioritize individual or even political interests.

"Therefore, the involvement and control of the general public, NGOs, and academicians is necessary to assist with the alignment of policy management of watersheds already made by the relevant government agencies," he said.

The scientific speeches of IPB’s three new professors held simultaneously is a new tradition developed by IPB. Currently, the scientific speech of professor at IPB always involves three professors.

With the inauguration of these three professors, the number of Professors in IPB has increased. At present, it accounts for 180 professors consisting of 30 emeritus professors and 150 active professors. (Mtd)
