Three IPB Researchers Were Granted Anugerah Kekayaan Intelektual Luar Biasa (AKIL)

Three researchers of Bogor Agricultural University (IPB) were awarded  Anugerah Kekayaan Intelektual Luar Biasa (AKIL – Special Intellectual Property  Right) in 2012. The awards were official granted by  the Minister of Education and Culture of Indonesia, Prof. Muh Nuh, on Tuesday,  20 November 2012, in Jakarta. The three researchers are: (1).  Dr.Ir. Muhammad Syukur, M.Si of  the Department of Agronomy and Horticulture (AGH), Faculty of Agriculture, Prof. Erliza Hambali of Department of  Industrial  Technology of Agriculture (TIN) Faculty of Agricultural Technology (Fateta), and Prof. C. Hanny Wijaya from the Department of Food Science and Technology (ITP) Fateta.
 
Prof. Dr. C. Hanny Wijaya was granted the award for his work on the Cajuputs (Melaleuca cajuputi Roxb.) Candy as lozenges and Homeostasis protector for  Mouth Flora. While Prof. Erliza Hambali was granted the award for his work on the Process for the Production of Surfactant of Methyl Ester Sulfonate (MES) from Methyl Ester Olein.  MES is used for the process for Enhanced Oil Recovery Applications and this arrangement is preferred for what is called "huff and puff" method, from palm oil stearin  for Enhanced Water Flooding. Both are entered in the category of patent-protected technology. While Dr.Ir. Muhammad Syukur was granted the award for his work on plant variety protected rights Plant Variety Protection (PVP) and was named the pepper plant breeder.
 
Prof. Hanny was successfully produced lozenges made of natural ingredients namely  eucalyptus extracts that nourish the body. "We wrap and package the lozenges in a special way  to be the  candy  like,  which is characterized by local content, simple, practical, inexpensive and healthy," said Prof. Hanny. According to Prof. Hanny his product was  one of the four inventions that have been approved by  PT. WAHANA Karya for further commercialized. Prof. Hanny has been implementing the cajuputs candy research program since 1996. On the  2011, Cajuputs candy was among the 103 most prospective innovation issued Bussines Innovation Centre.

Similarly with chili variety  as the result of the Dr. Syukur’ research program, especially the non hybrid has also been successfully been marketed by Dramaga Seed, under the management of  Department of Agronomy and Horticulture, Faculty of Agriculture, IPB. "I have been implementing chili research program since 2003. Up to now 15 varieties of both hybrid and non-hybrid are successfully bred, "said Dr. Syukur. One of  the hybrid varieties is  IPB CH3. Whereas the non-hybrid varieties are: Pesona IPB, Anies IPB, SSP IPB. IPB CH3 was successfully registered among the 103 innovations of 2011, while the Pesona IPB was among 104 most prospective innovation issued by Bussines Innovation Centre in 2012.

The production of non-hybrid seeds will reduce the burdens of chili farmers who are limited in capital and reduce reliance imported seeds. For the comparison the price of chili seeds for 10 grams is  Rp 15.000,- (fiveteen thousand Rupiah), it is much cheaper compare with the price of imported hybrid seeds of chilli which costs  10 grams for Rp 100.000,- (hundred  thousand Rupiah).

Rector of IPB, Prof. Dr. Herry Suhardiyanto expressed his appreciation for this brilliant achievement they made. "Congratulation for faculty members who are granted such award I appreciate them highly. I expect that the number of achievements will be made by faculty members, students, and educational starr will be increased  in the future, as well as the accomplishments made by IPB as as an institution. This will further strengthen the role of IPB in developing science and agricultural development in Indonesia.
The granting of the Anugerah Kekayaan Intelektual Luar Biasa is really an appropriate event to demonstrate the accomplishments for faculty members, researchers, and community at large who successfully make intellectual property which are in efficient and effective manner. Innovation and creativity are expected to drive the industry, the economy, and solve problems in the community related to the environment. In addition to improve the knowledge that will improve the image the nation to be most competitive nation. The program is also expected to motivate the producers of intellectual property to continue to exist with the expertise to create or produce new findings, so as to contribute to the growth of a new industry or increase the competitiveness of the national economy. One of the requirements to be granted the award the prospective grantees have successfully applied their innovation and marketed in the society. (Wied).
