FMIPA IPB Invited Homeland Researchers for Discussing Science
Dean of the Faculty of Natural Sciences (F-MIPA) IPB, Dr Sri Nurdiati, officially opened the 5th National Seminar on Science, Saturday (10/11) in Hall of Common Class Room (CCR) Campus of IPB Dramaga Bogor. The seminar which took the theme of “Sains Sebagai Landasan Inovasi dalam Bidang Energi, Lingkungan, dan Pertanian Berkelanjutan / Science as the Foundation of Innovation in the Sustainable Fields of Energy, Environment and Agriculture” was attended by hundreds of participants coming from various areas in Indonesia.
Dr Sri explained, the National Seminar on Science was the routine activity which was held by F-MIPA IPB since 2008. This activity aimed to collect the researchers from various educational and research institutions, both universities and research institutes from all over Indonesia to describe the research results related to the application of science to the innovation of the sustainable fields of energy, environment, and agriculture.
“Through activities such as this seminar, hopefully it can become the container for exchanging information and innovation ideas which are able to solve a variety of problems facing this nation. Thus the research we do is not only stopped in the class or in the lab, but to be useful to mankind,” explained Dr Sri.
To be present on this occasion was Dr Robert Manurung, the expert staff at the Energy Research Center of ITB which conveyed the keynote speech of “Pengembangan Sistem Pertanian-Bioindustri Berkelanjutan / Development of Sustainable Agricultural System-Bio-industry”.
According to him, the science-based innovation related to agro-ecology, the process and cycle of biogeochemical, the transformation of solar power to become the chemical energy, the efficiency of nutrient and water, the breeding and utilization of biodiversity, the pest and disease control, the remote sensing and other supporting techniques were still indispensable for the development of sustainable agricultural system-bio-industry.
Problem related to the handling of the biomass material also needed to be observed, starting from harvest time, post-harvest time, processing time, transportation and product supply chain system. “The side to be examined may be a stumbling block of the development of the integrated agriculture-bio-industry. But when it can be handled properly, it will be the support service sector of bio-industry which is also the activity which provides employment opportunities and economic improvement in rural area,” concluded Dr Robert Manurung.
Meanwhile, in the plenary session the Head of Center of Climate Change and Air Quality of BMKG, Dr Edwin Aldrian, the Chairman of Unity Actuary of Indonesia, Dr Budi Tampubolon, and Dr Tony Ibnu Sumaryada from the Department of Physics of F-MIPA IPB, presented. (nm)
