Potential and Opportunities in Fishery not Optimally Explored
Indonesia is rich in natural resources. With the water of two-thirds of the land area, it is actually the potential source of fisheries, both marine and freshwater fish. However, this does not seem to have been well explored although the fishery sector is very promising.
So said Dr. Wiji Tri Nuraeni, lecturer of Faculty of Fisheries of IPB, in Interactive Dialogue of RRI in Bogor on Tuesday (6/4).
Further, Dr Wiji said that the fishing business opportunities in Indonesia are potential to develop. Even the existing government programs such as minapolitan give hope to the fishermen in the area to move forward. Meanwhile the freshwater fish culture needs further development in the superior products local fish in each region.
"The challenges that need to be taken care of by the fishermen are for example cost, weather and government policy, while the challenges for freshwater fish farmers are fish seed, disease and marketing. Thus, in the future, the role of government, universities and communities is needed to further maintain the sustainability of fishery," said Dr Wiji. (Mtd)
