Supporting the Planting of 1 Billion Trees, PGN asks IPB to Plant Mangrove

The State Gas Company (Ltd) Tbk (PGN) in collaboration with the Institute for Research and Community Services (LPPM), Bogor Agricultural University (IPB) planted mangrove on 47 spots in the forest area of Sedyatmo Highway, Angke Kapuk, DKI Jakarta (9/5). The event raising the theme "Hijau Negeriku, Lestari Alamku" (Green Country of Mine will be a Preserved Country) was held as one of the series in the 47th Anniversary of PGN, which is also a support for the planting program of 1 billion trees launched by the government.

The mangrove planting and its maintenance involves 75 students of IPB currently receiving the PGN scholarship through Karya Salemba Empat (KSE). The mangrove planting in the coastal areas of Angke Kapuk uses the technique of plotting developed by Prof. Dr. Cecelia Kusmana of IPB. In this regard, Vice Recor for Academic and Student Affairs of IPB, Prof. Dr. Ir. Yonny Koesmaryono, MS says, "I thank Prof. Dr. Cecelia Kusmana for his innovation, which enables us to rehabilitate our plants."

This activity is intended to rehabilitate the mangrove ecosystem in the coastal region of Angke Kapuk, Jakarta so that it can function optimally for the protection of coastal environment. It aims to provide socio-economic benefits to the coastal communities around Angke Kapuk in particular and the community of Jakarta in general. In his speech, Mayor of North Jakarta, H. Bambang Sugiono, SE, MSi expressed his appreciation to IPB and PGN as the savior of the citizens of Jakarta ".

Mangrove ecosystems have a variety of ecological and socio-economic functions, which are crucial for the maintenance and improvement of the quality of environmental services as well as the promotion of the life quality of coastal communities around the mangrove forest. Director of Technology and Development of PGN, Jobi Triananda Hasjim says, "PGN would like to be good at maintenance;  not only good at planting and but must ensure that mangrove trees are not just a government program but we also are trying to do how it could become the country’s economic protector".
