Building Effective Communication in IPB
The Directorate of Human Resources, Bogor Agricultural University (IPB) held a thematic training "Building Effective Communication", Thursday (3/5) in the Common Education Building, Darmaga campus of IPB. Rector of IPB, Prof. Herry Suhardiyanto in his speech said that effective communication is needed in large organizations such as IPB. "No good performance can be achieved without effective communication since IPB is of an integrated system. There is an intense interaction in it." said Rector, especially now that there are over three thousand teachers and educational staff in IPB.
Effective communication, said the Rector, starts from positive thought which is then refined with complete information. If the sender is not right in delivering the message, then it will not get through. "Things like this need to be considered. Message delivered with sincerity and compassion will get there properly," said Rector.
According to Professor from the Department of Communication Science Community Development, Faculty of Human Ecology, IPB, Prof. Aida S. Vitayala Hubeis, communication is the essence of human life. Research results indicate that about 75-90 percent of human time is spent communicating. "So you can imagine, if our communication is poor every day, it means our lives are also bad. Conversely, if our communication is good, then our life itself would also be good," said Prof. Aida.
The key to effective communication, said Prof. Aida, is good listen, paying attention to non-verbal messages, clear communication, and positive thinking. "Positive thinking, being open to each other, mutual honesty and mutual respect facilitate effective communication," said Prof. Aida.
Communication problems can occur as a result of organization magnitude and complexity as well as prejudice. Ineffective communication creates distorted messages, such as a reduced content of the message, uncertain content of the message instead of clear/specific statements. At the end of the presentation Prof. Aida advised participants to view our colleagues as well as our jobs as our friends. (Mtd)
