IPB Green Bike 2011 held on Saturday (1/10) in the Darmaga Campus of IPB marks the spirit of the academic communities to keep the campus remain green. Some 400 units of campus bicycles were provided for the event in which the IPB academic communities were participating. The start and finish line of the cycling for the 48th IPB Anniversary is at the yard of Rectorate or Andi Hakim Nasoetion Building.

IPB Rector Prof. Dr. Herry Suhardiyanto in the welcoming speech to IPB 2011 Bike Green said, in the developed countries, cycling has become the primary choice of citizens in transportation. For such a purpose, they do not hesitate to buy a bike from their own pockets.

"We’re in IPB, already provided with bicycles, purchased with state funds or granted by some sponsors. We just use and take care of them. Therefore it takes all of our commitment to consistently ride the bikes as a culture in campus, "said Rector.

Rector also highlights on-campus motor-bike parking that increasingly requires special handling, due to the increasing number of motorcycle used by the academic communities. At some points on this campus, he said, motor bikes have actually taken a large parking area for cars.

Not only that, the Chancellor also expressed concern over the behaviors of OJEG (riders of motor bikes for public transport), who no longer observe the ethics of traffics. "They (OJE) have made the campus as a circuit or racing track for them. This is sometimes also supported by some students asking the riders accelerate the vehicle more quickly for fear of late classes. Therefore, let’s end the unhealthy behaviors by re-popularizing the healthy mode of transportation," said Rector.

Seen to ride the bike were among others Vice Rector of IPB for Research and Cooperation Prof. Dr. Miftah Anas Fauzi, Secretary of LPPM IPB. Dr. Sulistiono and a lecturer at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine IPB Prof. Dr. Upik Kesumawati.

The event supported by Polygon and Zoom Computer was sprinkled with lots of prizes. A number of bicycles, computers and various other prizes are given free of charge to the participants of Green Bike via a lucky draw. (Mtd)
