Unexpectedly, in the last few years  our country was often considered the most disadvantaged in the eyes of the international community. But according to the Secretary of the Coordinating Minister for People’s Welfare, Prof. Dr. Ir. Indroyono Soesilo, with reference to the 2010 Human Development Index (HDI) Report,  Indonesia went up in HDI [country] ranking from 111 to 108, and overall we see a positive progress as the country was grouped into the Medium human development (developing countries). Thus, Indonesia rose  its status  higher. “The positive trends we have seen in Indonesia over the last few years have continued to this year. This statement was reported  when he was invited as the resource person in the Stadium General "Growth with Equity" in Mahogany room, of the  Masters in Business Management campus, on 8 February 2011.

The event was organized in explore input from university within the framework of promotion of Prof. Indroyono as one of the Indonesian candidate for the Director General of FAO.

Prof. Indroyono added,  in the global competitive index Indonesia has also risen   from the rank 69 out of 104 countries in 2004 to 44 out of 133 countries in 2010. In addition, Indonesia has been grouped into the Asian Top 10 Movers for all categories: non-income (education and health) and Income (revenue) within the period from 1970 to 2010.

However, according to Rector of Bogor Agricultural University in his remarks currently the lower  educated labors  still dominate the Indonesian labor force, whereas the agricultural production in Indonesia is still below the target. Therefore, he expects that students should be able to compete on the  international level, not contribute to the increasing number of educated unemployment, he said.

In addition, to be the world class research university with tropical agriculture as  its core competence students of Bogor Agricultural University are required to promote agricultural innovation. Rector further emphasized that we should pay attention to the global warming issues as it might affect our  agriculture development. The implications are sobering for all concerned about poverty and long-term economic development of our country.

Related to the election of Prof. Indroyono as the only candidate  from Indonesia for the Director General of FAO, rector of Bogor Agricultural University hopes it will promote Indonesia to  the international world. (Wied).
