The first day of the IPB University New Student Orientation (MPKMB) (8/11) was lively. Influencer Andovi da Lopez and comedian Arie Kriting were present to enliven the event and deliver a message of encouragement to new IPB students, ‘Jatayu Harsakala’.

At the MPKMB Vocational School (D4 Applied Bachelor), Andovi da Lopez highlighted the importance of young people’s awareness of mental health issues, especially amid the growing influence of social media.

He emphasized that the world portrayed in social media only shows the highlights, not the real picture.

“Instagram shows a perfect world, but we know that life is not always about being on top. So, I feel sorry for the current generation who compare themselves to what they see on social media,” he said.

During his session, Andovi gave three tips to stop this cycle. First, reduce the amount of time spent on social media. Second, instill the mindset that social media is not the real world. Third, prioritize face-to-face or offline relationships.

“Offline interactions are quality connections, so it’s important to always prioritize them,” he said. According to him, direct relationships, such as meeting friends in the cafeteria, are more meaningful than interacting through online messages.

These three tips are closely related to a question raised by one of the students in the Q&A session regarding support systems. He realizes that each person’s circumstances and conditions are different.

“When someone has privilege, they actually have a greater responsibility to embrace those around them, empathize with others, and always have a higher level of emotional intelligence. Having good communication and relationships can improve mental health,” he said.

“Empathy and communication are key. This principle applies not only on campus, but also in all aspects of life, including in the state,” he concluded.

Meanwhile, at the MPKMB Undergraduate Program (S1) which took place at the IPB Dramaga campus, the famous comedian Arie Kriting delivered a similar message. For him, communication is not only full of words, but also full of feelings. The feelings that are conveyed can make people more connected.

“Be careful with communication, because we also need to think about the impact of that communication,” said Arie Kriting in front of 5.536 new undergraduate students at Grha Widya Wisuda, IPB Dramaga Campus.

According to Arie Kriting, Indonesia’s diversity of regional languages is a positive thing. Dialects from different regions, he said, give uniqueness and character to communication.

“Dialects will not change dialogue because with the same language, we can understand each other even if we use different dialects,” he concluded. (*/Rz) (IAAS/LAN)
