IPB University Rector: Lecturers Must Inspire, Not Just Teach
A total of 185 lecturers from the Vocational School (SV) of IPB University participated in the “Strengthening Lecturer Competence in Promoting Relevant and Contextual Vocational Learning” program. The program was held as part of IPB University’s commitment to improving the quality of vocational education.
During the event, IPB University Rector Prof Arif Satria emphasized the importance of lecturers who can inspire students, not just deliver course material.
“A good lecturer can explain. But a great lecturer can inspire,” he said on Wednesday (7/9) at the IPB International Convention Center in Bogor City.
According to him, inspiring lecturers are those who can motivate students to think and act. As a result, their students become enlightened, open-minded, and more enthusiastic in life.
Therefore, Prof Arif believes it is crucial for lecturers to understand students’ characteristics to guide them in a contextual and relevant manner. This aligns with the “Student First” spirit that underpins this competency enhancement initiative.
“We must understand which aspects of students we need to develop. That is what sets us apart from others. Because we are lecturers with passion and inspiration, not just chasing salaries, but pursuing achievements,” said Prof Arif.
He also emphasized the importance of a strong personal foundation in shaping an inspiring lecturer. Citing the six success factors mentioned in the event integrity, discipline, social skills, spousal support, hard work, and passion as the keys to success.
“If we work hard but are still the same as others, that’s not enough. We must work harder than others. And that can only be done if we work with our hearts, with genuine enthusiasm,” he explained.
Furthermore, Prof Arif stated that passion for one’s profession is the primary foundation for developing competence. He emphasized that love for one’s profession and hard work are the keys to continuous growth, even more important than merely achieving competence.
“If your hobby is teaching, your work and hobby are the same, which makes you happy. And that will spark the motivation to keep learning and honing your skills,” he said. (*/Rz) (IAAS/LAN)
