IPB University Sharia Economics Expert Responds to Danantara’s Acquisition of BSI
IPB University Sharia Economics Expert, Prof Irfan Syauqi Beik, expressed his views regarding the acquisition of Bank Syariah Indonesia (BSI) by Danantara. He assessed that this acquisition could have a positive impact if managed carefully and comprehensively.
“I hope that the acquisition of BSI by Danantara can have a positive effect on the development of BSI. Therefore, the legality issues must be clear,” he said.
Prof Irfan reminded the importance of a smooth transition process from Bank Mandiri as the controlling shareholder (PSP) to Danantara so as not to disrupt BSI’s performance.
He also suggested an in-depth study, including the addition of core capital so that BSI can be upgraded to a book 4 bank.
“This acquisition could put BSI on par with its former parent, Bank Mandiri, as both will be under Danantara’s control,” he explained.
He explained that this acquisition is part of Danantara’s grand design as a strategic SOE super holding in Indonesia. It is hoped that BSI can provide greater added value in the ecosystem. However, he emphasized the need for caution so as not to cause negative impacts for both BSI and Danantara.
Prof Irfan also reminded that the support previously provided by Bank Mandiri, such as technology and services, should not be cut off post-acquisition. He considers Danantara to be fully responsible for the management of BSI.
Furthermore, he sees this acquisition as an opportunity to strengthen BSI’s position in the national banking industry, including its involvement in international banking to support halal industry exports.
“BSI can also be strengthened in its role in distributing Sharia KUR, APBN and APBD, as well as supporting national strategic programs,” he added.
Prof Irfan concluded by highlighting the importance of BSI’s exploration of new sectors, such as renewable energy, food security, and the creative economy. He also encouraged BSI to strengthen its role in optimizing zakat and waqf as part of the development of the Islamic social finance sector. (dh) (IAAS/RWA).
