The Faculty of Forestry and Environment (Fahutan) at IPB University recently organized the Fahutan Training Series (FTS), a soft skills training program for students. This year’s theme was “Life Skills Training for Survival in the Jungle.”

Prof Noor Farikhah Haneda, the Vice Dean of Academic Affairs and Student Affairs at Fahutan IPB University, mentioned that since 2020, Fahutan IPB University has consistently supported self-development programs and soft skills training for students.

The activity was attended by students from the 57th, 58th, and 59th batches, representing four departments within Fahutan IPB University, including the Department of Forest Management (MNH), the Department of Forest Products (HH), the Department of Forest Resource Conservation and Ecotourism (KSHE), and the Department of Silviculture (SVK).

“This edition of the Fahutan Training Series is a series of soft skills training designed to equip students with the skills to carry out activities in the forest or field effectively. Essentially, this program is a series of life skills training for students to adaptively survive while carrying out activities in the forest (field),” she said.

In field activities, cooperation, coordination, and communication with various parties are often required in making a decision. Therefore, Prof Noor Farikhah stated that technically, this training not only develops students’ life skills but also stimulates the development of students’ soft skills in accordance with 21st-century skills.

The FTS 2023 program took place from October 21 to November 5, 2023. Throughout the program, students were trained on various topics by competent speakers in their respective fields. These topics included jungle survival techniques, ethics for activities in the forest/field, and the identification of edible flora/fauna for survival.

“Not only that, students were also equipped with climbing techniques, ASIK travel management (religious, sportsmanship, intellectual, and creative), land navigation techniques, map-making techniques, and jungle survival techniques,” she continued.

Moreover, she mentioned that in this program, participants would also conduct a camping simulation and terrain orientation (Mini Expedition) to practice all the theories provided during the training. (*/Rz) (IAAS/Hap)
