The Faculty of Forestry and Environment (Fahutan) of IPB University signed a cooperation agreement (PKS) with the Directorate General of Natural Resources and Ecosystem Conservation (Ditjen KSDAE), Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK) RI. The cooperation was established to strengthen the function of the area and conserve biodiversity in a sustainable manner in five Technical Implementation Units (UPT) under the Directorate General of KSDAE.

The signing of the PKS was carried out by Dr Naresworo Nugroho as Dean of Fahutan IPB University and Director General of KSDAE, Prof. Satyawan Pudyatmoko. The PKS is a follow-up to implementing the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Secretary General of KLHK RI and the Rector of IPB University in 2020, valid for five years.

“The purpose of this PKS is to synergize the implementation of the tri dharma of higher education in environmental and forestry management through efforts to strengthen the function of conservation areas and increase the effectiveness of conservation programs for biological resources and ecosystems in a sustainable manner,” said Dr Naresworo.

The five UPTs are the Gunung Gede Pangrango National Park Center, Jambi Natural Resources Conservation Center (KSDA), Way Kambas National Park Center, Gunung Halimun Salak National Park Center and Ujung Kulon National Park Center. The cooperation is also part of the support for implementing the tri dharma of higher education in environmental and forestry management.

Some of the scope of activities of this cooperation include 1) the development of education and training programs in the field of natural resource and ecosystem conservation, capacity building and personal skills related to natural resource and ecosystem conservation, exchange of data and information; 2) technical assistance support and research and development in the form of joint research on natural resources and ecosystems that are important for conservation.

Not only that, the cooperation also includes 3) support for community empowerment through economic improvement activities based on community resources and potential; 4) support for area protection through increasing the effectiveness and efficiency of efforts to protect and manage natural resources and ecosystems; and 5) support for the preservation of flora and fauna through strengthening the governance of plant and wildlife conservation, development and implementation of management plans.

Furthermore, this meeting also discussed the agenda of strengthening special cooperation between the Department of Forest Resource Conservation and Ecotourism (KSHE), Fahutan IPB University and three national parks within the scope of the Directorate General of KSDAE (Gunung Gede Pangrango National Park Center, Gunung Halimun Salak National Park Center and Way Kambas National Park Center). The collaboration is related to the implementation plan of Freedom of Learning – Independence Campus (MBKM) within the framework of the Independence Campus Competition Program (PKKM) through the implementation of joint wildlife practices and joint practices in conservation area management, ecotourism and environmental services in the three partner national parks.

At the end of this meeting, both parties expressed their joint commitment regarding various current and future cooperation programs in order to strengthen the function of the area and conservation of biological resources sustainably in order to achieve Indonesia’s FOLU Net Sink 2030, Indonesia Emas 2045 and Indonesia Net Zero Emission 2060.
