Cassaboe, Typical Handicraft of Bogor Made of Wasted Cassava Stem
31 (thirty one) teams for Student Creativity Program (PKM) of Bogor Agricultural University (IPB) were successfully passed the selection process for the Pekan Ilmiah Mahasiswa Nasional (PIMNAS National Student Scientific Week) 2017 and were despatched by Rector on 17 August 2017 in the flag ceremony of the Independence Day. One of the IPB Teams for PIMNAS 2017, which is consisted of Faiz Ahmad Ghozy, Nuri Septika Witdyawati, Diska Anjelina Sudarta, Luthfi Kartiko and Farida Utami Ritonga have succeeded transformed cassava stems into interesting souvenirs by empowering villagers in Bogor.
This community service program aims is to improve the skills and productivity of youth and open up opportunities for entrepreneurs in the future. This program is also needed in order to increase the added value and competitiveness of domestic products. It goes beyond identifying the skills and competences involved, to present illustrative examples of practice and cross-sectoral cooperation.
"This Cassaboe program is trying to facilitate the youth of Wargajaya, Cigudeg, Bogor to increase the productivity and explore the potentiality of the youths. Cassaboe is a handicraft product utilising wasted cassava stem starch into the high priced products with added value. The Cassaboe project they planned have encouraged jobless youths of Wargajaya to participate their community development program, " said Faiz as chairman of PKM.
The handicrafts were produced under the cooperative program between the youths of Wargajaya Village, Cigudeg District, Bogor. The group has planned to establish training course, to improve their skills.
Wargajaya Village is one of the big cassava producing villages in Bogor Regency and of course the waste of cassava stems produced is also quite a lot. Of the 7454 residents, 2274 of them are youths aged 15-29 years or 30.50% of the total population.
A total of 15 youths have become the target group of the program. Unused cassava stem waste can be utilized and will be processed further into functional and aesthetic souvenirs, thus increasing the added value of the product.
"By utilizing Cassaboe, the youths of Wargajaya Village have assisted in managing solid waste in the community, as well as have generated entrepreneurial activities that increase productivity and income. The spirit to love our own culture and icons typical of Bogor, and West Java are implemented in the production of innovative works that are made, "he said.
The faculty member who is supervising the group is Dr.Eny Palupi, STP, MSc (of the Department of Community Nutrition of IPB), she expected that the Cassaboe spirit will continue to roll for a better future.
