The trash problem was indeed endless. The trash was the rest of the daily activities of the human beings. The amount of the trash continued to increase. Like in the campus environment of Bogor Agricultural University (IPB) of Dramaga which was densely populated. Seeing this issue, Forum Wacana IPB held the Postgraduate Thematic Studies themed “Sampah untuk Kesejahteraan Bersama / Trash for Joint Welfare” in Danau Room 2 IPB (22/4). This study was held as a form of awareness of the trash problem which was still a serious problem.

“We try to raise the issue of trash into a deep study, and the output of the paper will be used friends of the students on the program of Bina Desa,” said Alexander Kurniawan, as the Chief Executive.

In this event, it was presented the experts in the field of the management of the trash, namely Johanis R. Pangala (Center for Environmental Research – IPB) and Gugi Yogaswara  (Environmental Management System Auditor, Sucofindo). This event examined two interesting things, namely the use of trash as a medium of planting, the opportunity and business concept of the trash.

Johanis explained that the trash was an indicator of a community. The concept of 3R namely reduce, reuse, and recycle, was not enough to solve the trash problem. Should add one more R, namely rethink.

According to the researcher who was concerned in this field of charcoal, the biochar of charcoal was the right solution for the wet trash processing. “The wet trash processing with the biochar will produce the biokomsamba which can be used as the planting medium”, he added. The potential development of this biokomsamba which was the roof top or vertical farming in the buildings of IPB.

In terms of business, Gugi said that the opportunity for the trash processing into the business field could be seen from the flow of management. The trash management flow included the sorting, the collection, the transportation, the processing, and the final processing. The final processing section had a large business opportunity, especially in the type of household trash.

The business concept of the trash was an effort to strengthen the environmental management and also for the rural development. The trash business could be the simple business, namely the stall trash business, the trash hauling business, the plastic grinder, the medium business using the rotary kiln tool, and the large-scale business or industry like the windrow composting.

According to one participant, the thematic review about this trash was very interesting to be studied further. “I hope the community especially in IPB can be more aware to protect the environment and to start trying to utilize the trash in various ways”, he said.

Also attending the event were the Chairman of Forum Wacana IPB and the Head of Department of Kastrat of Forum Wacana IPB, Radyum Ikono, and M. Nirwan, S.KM, M.Kes.(NIRS/Zul)
