Director of PKHA IPB: graduation is not the end but the beginning of our bigger life and bigger challenges
Directorate of Career Development and Alumni Relations of Bogor Agricultural University (DPKHA IPB) again organized Studium Generale of Pre Graduation, on Monday, 16 October 2017, at Auditorium Andi Hakim Nasoetion, IPB Campus, Dramaga, Bogor. This event aims to give an idea to the graduates who will go to the job markets. A university education is often seen as a reliable pathway to a good career and a comfortable life, but this pathway also seems to be crumbling with ongoing weakness in the job market.
Director of DPKHA IPB, Dr. Syarifah Iis Aisyah, said that graduation is not the end but the beginning of our bigger life and bigger challenges in life to face. Finding and keeping talent in a tight labour market is one of the toughest challenges an organization may face, for it takes the ability to manage yourself and others (softskill). Softskill is the development of a concept that is known as emotional intelligence, and abilities beyond technical and academic ability, preferring intra and interpersonal skills.
According to her, Indonesia must prepare itself to improve the quality not only of its goods and services but also of its human skills, so that it would not serve as a mere market for other countries in the region. To face the AEC`s formation in 2015, Indonesia needs to increase its competitive power. Indonesia is facing crucial manpower problems and need to improve the competitiveness of its human resources to enable them to compete in the labour market at home and in the ASEAN integrated region. No more offers, the only way to deal with it is to prepare for capacity building. In addition, the graduates should have demonstrated understanding and proficiency in the English language. They should be able to prove that their command of the English language is sufficient to enable them to perform as officers.
"There are many different types of jobs offered in the world of work lately. However, to be qualified for those jobs/vacancies applicants must speak English well. The phenomenon that makes English so difficult to learn is grammatical patterns. English has a number of unusual grammatical patterns and sentence-level patterns. However, we have to change our perception on English, it shouldn’t be difficult matter but it will be helpful instrument for us to get good jobs, " she said.
The event was attended by approximately 300 prospective graduates who will be conferred their graduation on Wednesday, 18 October 2017, at Grha Widya Wisuda. Meanwhile, with the presence of resource persons with entrepreneurial background and professionals are expected to open the vision of prospective graduates facing big challenges after graduation.
Two resource persons were invited as speakers for the Studium General of Pre Graduation, namely the President Director of PT. Giat Cerdas Sentosa, Dr. Edy Priyono, and its Finance Manager, Dr. Chairy Hakim. The speakers presented motivation and passion to find appropriate jobs. (Wied)
