12 Students from Malaysia and Korea Visit the Department of Family and Consumer Science of FEMA IPB for Summer Course Program

The Department of Family and Consumer Science (IKK) of the Faculty of Human Ecology of Bogor Agricultural University (FEMA IPB) in cooperation with Universiti Putera Malaysia, Seoul National University Korea, and Kyung Hee University Korea have organized  "Summer Course" Program in 2017. The theme of the event is "Family Life among Agricutural Families in West Java: The Dynamic of Family Resource Management, Parenting, and Consumer Practice", is carried out on 22-28 August 2017. A total 12 students from Universiti Putera Malaysia, Seoul National University Korea and Kyung Hee University Korea have been officially accepted by the Dean of FEMA IPB, Dr. Arif Satria, on Tuesday, 22 August 2017, at the Community and Nutrition Education (AMG Connect) of FEMA IPB,  IPB Campus, Dramaga, Bogor.

Dr. Arif Satria stated that the IKK Department has the opportunities to carry out various innovations in cooperation with the regional and international universities to support the internationalization of education. The established cooperation have been providing opportunities for students of the IKK Department to establish wider networking, as well as increasing the interaction between students at home country and abroad to improve the quality of IKK Department students in increasing their competences.

He said that the international program will provide foreign students to get first-hand information on family science, especially family resource management, child care, and consumer behaviour, through face-to-face classes to improve their knowledge and insight. In addition, they will also be given opportunities to do field works, they will observe and  interview farmer groups and farmers' families, especially those who are patronized by IPB, i.e. villages around the campus.

Meanwhile, the Head of the IKK Department of FEMA IPB, Prof. Dr. Ujang Sumarwan, explained that the Summer Course program will be offered for foreign students of partner institutions of the IKK Department overseas. He said that the program is in line with key performance indicators of IPB, especially in terms of inbound mobility of academicians and students. Therefore, by having the Summer Course program, the performance indictor of the IKK Department in 2017, especially for inbound academicians and students will increase.

Summer Course Program offered currently is the integration of lectures and field works of the scientific mandate of the IKK Department. This Summer Course activity is expected to be the media promotion of IKK Department at regional and international level, so that foreign students will take the IKK Department as their inbound academic destination.

Representative of the Universiti Putra Malaysia, Prof. Madya Rumaya Juhari, stated that the joined Summer Course Program, established cooperatively between IPB with Malaysia and Korean universities should be improved to strengthen institutional, especially the field of research and education. "The cooperative program will provide platform for exchange knowledge, and sharing education experiences which will beneficial of all parties," he said.

Summer Course participants will be accommodated in Cikarawang Village, Dramaga District, Bogor. This activity will also involve the Association of Student of Family and Consumer Science (Himaiko) to come together and interact with village officials, as well as farmer groups. To support face-to-face classes,  syllabus and lesson plan, as well as related material modules to be presented for the program have been prepared. (Wied)
