Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Bogor Agricultural University (FKH of IPB), in collaboration with Association of Small Animal Veterinarian Practitioners of Indonesia (ADHPHKI) and Indonesian Veterinary Medical Association (PDHI) West Java II branch held Seminar and Workshop on Small Animal Anesthesia with the theme, “Mengurangi Rasa Nyeri dan Penderitaan Dimulai dengan Anaesthesia / Reducing Pain and Suffering is Started with Anaesthesia”, Tuesday-Wednesday (30-31/8) , in the Hospital of Education of FKH of IPB, Campus of IPB Darmaga, Bogor. The seminar activity was followed by 45 participants, while the workshop was followed by 24 participants coming from Makasar, Bali, Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Tangerang and Bekasi (Jabodetabek).

Chairman of the Indonesian Veterinary Medical Association (PDHI) West Java II branch, Prof. Dr. drh. Deni Noviana, said, the anaesthesia was a method of reducing pain when performed the surgery on the small animals  such as dogs and cats. This activity was devoted to the veterinary practitioners who had graduated from FKH of IPB to continue to seek and study the veterinary science. “Especially to accomodate the young doctors in exploring and studying the veterinary science, and updating the existing science or developing it to a more perfect,” said the Director of the Hospital of Education of FKH of IPB.

According to drh. Siti Komariah, the Chairman of the Association of Small Animal Veterinarian Practitioners of Indonesia (ADHPHKI), the anaesthesia was divided into two groups namely analgesic and anaesthesia of conscious state. The analgesic was not always eliminating all pain but it was always relieving the pain. Some types of anaesthesia caused the loss of consciousness, some were just relieving the pain of certain parts of the body and the wearer remained conscious. “The anaesthetic drugs given to the animal will make the animal insensitive to pain, so it becomes calmer. This makes the surgery safer and smoother, especially in dogs and cats,” she said.

While, the Vice Dean for Resource, Cooperation and Development, the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (FKH) of IPB, Dr. drh. Trioso Purnawarman, M.Si, when opening the Seminar and Workshop said, “All surgical procedures are started with the anaesthesia. Therefore, this expertise is very important and becomes a core competency which must be owned by the veterinarians and the paramedics. The development of the techniques of anaesthesia is to relieve the pain and rapidly increase the animal suffering along with the techniques of complex operations.” According to him, this coincided with the development of drugs and medical equipment. This technique was started from the simplest to the most challenging. The participants would get the basic theories of the seminar and understand the latest techniques currently practiced in the workshop. (awl)
