Apart from having great ecological-economic potential, coastal area is faced with the threat of environmental damage, which can end up with the people poverty. One cause of this problem is a severe contestation between sectors along with a lack of coordination between related agencies. The issue was brought up in the "National Training Workshop on Baseline / Risk Vulnerability Assessment and State of the Coast Reporting (SOC) for ICM Sites in Indonesia". The workshop, held in Bali on August 9, 2016, is part of the implementation of Integrated Coastal Management (ICM) in Indonesia supported by the Partnerships in Environmental Management for the Seas of East Asia (PEMSEA) and the Ministry of Environment and Forests (KLHK) of RI as the focal point for Indonesia and the Center for Coastal and Marine Resource studies (PKSPL) of IPB’s Institute for Research and Community Service (LPPM), as the ICM National Learning Center in Indonesia.

Head of PKSPL-LPPM-IPB, Dr. Ario Damar, warned that the problems of coastal areas should be solved wholly and integratedly from upstream to coastal and marine areas. Therefore, ICM is an option supervised by PKSPL-LPPM-IPB to solve the complexity of the problem. "As learning, six priority areas are selected, namely Sukabumi, Tangerang, Bontang, East Lombok, Semarang and Bali Province which includes Gianyar, Buleleng, Tabanan, Badung, Jembrana, Karangasem, Bangli and Klungkung," said Dr. Ario.

In implementing the ICM program, PKSPL-LPPM of IPB as the National ICM Learning Center involves and assists local colleges as a partner of the provincial / district / city governments in the prioritized sites. The partner universities are  the University of Udayana (assisting Bali Province and its eight Regencies), University of Mataram (assisting the East Lombok), Mulawarman University (assisting Bontang), Diponegoro University (assisting Semarang), and PKSPL-LPPM of IPB (directly assisting Sukabumi and Tangerang Regency).

Dr. Ario said that in this workshop each provincial / district / city government is required to perform self-auditing related to the status of coastal areas for the implementation of ICM programs on the prioritized locations. *** (Mtd)
