Students of Department of Marine Science and Technology (ITK), Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Science (FPIK), Bogor Agricultural University (IPB) explored the anti-cancer of the soft coral in the Waters of Krakatau. The students consisting of Tio Dwi Wibisono, Ariefianto Tri Mahadi, Tri Nur Sujatmiko, and Paradita Hasanah under the guidance of Dr. Neviaty P. Zaman succeeded to show that the soft coral of the type of Sarcophyton had the activities of bioactive (anti-bacterial) and toxicity (anti-cancer) compounds which were better on the waters of acidification than the waters of reference.

Sampling was conducted in three locations namely Legon Tuo, Legon Cabe, and Umang-umang Island. The antibacterial test on the extract of Sarcophyton was performed using the method of resazurin, and the anti-cancer test was using the method of MTT (3-[4,5-dimetiltiazol-2il]-2,5-difenil tetrazolium bromida). This research activity was the activity of Creativity Program in the field of Research-Exact Science (PKMP-E) entitled “EKSPLORASI POTENSI BAHAN BIOAKTIF DAN TOKSISITAS KARANG LUNAK SARCOPHYTON SP.  DI PERAIRAN KRAKATAU / EXPLORATION OF POTENTIAL OF BIOACTIVE AND TOXICITY MATERIALS OF SOFT CORAL OF SARCOPHYTON SP. IN THE WATERS OF KRAKATAU” funded by the Ministry of Research, Technology and Higher Education.***
