Carcass Survey in 2012 conducted by the Faculty of Animal Husbandry, Bogor Agricultural University (IPB) indicates that the local cows of people farm in Indonesia were categorized as skinny 36 percent, mild 49 percent and fat 15 percent. In addition, about 30 per cent of cattle and buffalo ready for slaughtering were of old age and the average slaughter weight was 50 kilograms (kg) below the actual potential.

Therefore, it is necessary to increase the quality and quantity of feed, cages and raising system. The main problem is in developing forage or green feed due to the limited availability of land. One area with the potential use for the development of forage in Bogor is the forest land of Bogor Forest Tenure Region (KPH). It was this came up in the Expert Discussion on "Potential Development of Forage on Perhutani Area", on Thursday (25/2) in the Meeting Room of the Rector Building of Andi Hakim Nasution, Darmaga Campus of IPB, Bogor. KPH Perhutani of Bogor has more than 40 thousand hectares in Bogor Regency, and some locations are potential for the development of forage.

Director of Strategic Studies and Agricultural Policy (KSKP) of IPB, Dr. Dodik Ridho Nurrochmat said that KSKP-IPB begins to study the utilization of unused land. Some pilot studies of uncultivated land utilization are conducted on private or developer’s land, namely in Tanjung Sari of Sumedang and Gunung Putri, Bogor regency. "In the future, we are interested in developing forage grown on Perhutani," he said.

Head of KPH Bogor, Asep Dedi Mulyadi, S.Hut, MM said that he is open for this collaborative management model. He said, currently land managed by Perhutani is divided into two regions, namely Bogor and Bekasi Regency. He emphasizes that now both animal farming and state-owned businesses are excited to have cooperation related animal forage.

A livestock expert from the Department of Nutrition and Food Technology (INTP), Faculty of Husbandry of IPB, Prof. Dr. Panca Dewi Manuhara Karti says that the type of forage tolerant to the tree shade and can grow intercropping in Perhutani land is the legume. Leguminous forage can reduce the amount of concentrate because it contains protein.

Further, Prof. Panca said with adequate feed intake and quality, the cattle weight gain may reach 1 to 1.3 kg per day. Usually the cows are sold or slaughtered after the fattening period for 90-100 days, with a weight of 400-417 kg (an increase between 00-117kg).

Also present at the event were Chairman of Commission II of DPRD (House of People’s Representatives) of Bogor Regency, Ir Yuyud Wahyudin; Head of Livestock and Fishery Office of Bogor Regency, Ir. Siti Farikah, MM, Head of Economic Division of the Regional Development Planning Agency of Bogor Regency, Ir. Wawan Setiawan H, MM. (Mtd)
