Society for the Advancement of Breeding Sciences in Asia and Oceania (SABRAO) in collaboration with Bogor Agricultural University (IPB) and the Indonesia Association of Breeding Science (PERIPI) organized an international conference with the theme "Contribution of Breeding Research for Sustainable Agricultural Production under Changing Environment for Food Security in Asia and Oceania ". This conference, also as the 13th congress of SABRAO, was held on a Monday-Wednesday (14-16 / 9), at IPB International Convention Center (IICC), Bogor.

This event with the purpose of sharing ideas among breeders was officially opened by IPB’s Vice Rector of Resources and Strategic Studies IPB, Prof. Hermanto Siregar. In his speech, he mentioned the current agricultural challenges and the important role of breeders and agronomists.

"Asia and Oceania have the most rapid growth in the world both in terms of economy and demography, and this becomes a great challenge for us. With the rapid population and economic growth, the need for food also increases. In Indonesia, we have challenges in terms of food security, coupled with the global climate change. This is a challenge for agricultural experts and breeders. Therefore, the role for breeders becomes important to overcome this problem with their knowledge and expertise," explains Prof. Herman.

This conference is a meeting of the Asia and Oceania plant breeders from various institutions. It is attended by some 200 participants (academics and practitioners) from 13 countries.

" We focus on the theme on how we can conduct a useful breeding in order to deal with climate change and increase the capacity to feed the people in Asia and Oceania," explained Prof. Dr. Sobir as chief executive of this activity.

"It is expected with this meeting that especially the ability of breeders in Indonesia will improve, making the breeding program in Indonesia move ahead faster and better. We as researchers are not left behind on information. However, Asia Oceania region is the region that could respond appropriately to climate change," hopes Prof. Sobir, who is also a lecturer of the Department of Agronomy and Horticulture, Faculty of Agriculture of IPB and Vice President of SABRAO.
