Bogor Agricultural University (IPB) organized the Open Session of 52nd Dies Natalis IPB, Wednesday (2/9), in Grha Widya Wisuda, Campus of IPB Dramaga, Bogor. This event was one of a series of memorial agenda of Dies Natalis IPB this year themed “IPB untuk Kejayaan Maritim Indonesia / IPB for Indonesian Maritime Glory”. This activity was presented as a form of role of IPB in supporting of the government’s flagship program in the field of maritime.
In the open session this time, IPB presented the Chairman of Regional Representative Council (DPD) of Republic of Indonesia (RI), Irman Gusman. As known, DPD RI was the initiator of the preparation of Draft of Act about Maritime Affairs. Therefore, the role of DPD was strategic in strengthening the maritime sector in Indonesia.
This open session was led by Rector of IPB, Prof.Dr. Herry Suhardiyanto, which was attended by three thousands of students and lecturers of IPB. The Rector in his speech said that IPB as the educational institution consistently since 1963 began to print the human resources in the field of maritime affairs and fisheries. Marine research cluster was also developed i.e. covering Integrated Coastal Management, Coastal and Marine Life Support System, Sea Farming and Sea Ranching, Marine Bio-resources, and Port, Shipping and Maritime Logistic Management. Moreover, IPB helped to strengthen the maritime diplomacy, to encourage the policies of national and international levels like the policy implementation of Ecosystem Approach for Fisheries Management.
“IPB as the innovative people campus, the amount of innovation and the marine fisheries accounts as much as almost 20 percents of the total innovation of IPB. IPB is also ready to compete with the world universities to advance the marine for the glory of the maritime of Indonesia,” said the Rector.
Meanwhile, in his scientific oration titled “Memajukan Maritim untuk Kejayaan Indonesia / Advancing the Maritime for the Glory of Indonesia”, Chairman of DPD RI, Irman Gusman, conveyed that a nation could be regarded as a maritime nation if it had been able to optimally utilize the wealth of the sea as a source of well-being and prosperity of the country and its people. “Indonesia is striving towards a maritime country. We support the government agenda of Jokowi to make Indonesia as the world’s pivot which becomes the agenda in Nawa Cita,” said Irman.
According to him, there were five agenda that needed to be executed, i.e. (1) marine spatial planning, (2) building the infrastructure and maritime connectivity, (3) management of marine resources, both for fishing, marine tourism, energy, fresh water (through the process of desalinization) and pharmaceuticals, (4) maritime diplomacy, and (5) development of human resources and mastery of maritime science and technology.
Irman also appreciated the efforts of IPB as one of the leading universities in Indonesia to manifest Indonesia as a maritime country forward. “I appreciate and support the fight of IPB for the glory of the maritime of Indonesia,” said Irman.
Furthermore, he asserted, in an effort to realize Indonesia back as the maritime country, it was an indispensable support for the advanced mastery of science and technology and the reliable maritime Human Resources. “Obviously it is indispensable of many centers of excellent, that all marine resources that we have can be useful for the progress and the welfare of this beloved homeland,” he added.
On the same occasion, Dean of Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Science (FPIK) of IPB, Prof.Dr. Indra Jaya, said, “IPB is the center of excellent for developing the maritime higher education. The range of research that has been done by IPB is ranging from the basic research and the exploration through the application of research, both of biological resources (marine biota) and non-biological (marine environment), for the development of science and technology and the public welfare. Besides, IPB also develops the concepts of conservation and the sustainable use for the sustainability, so it can be enjoyed by the future generation”.
It was also emphasized, what had been done by IPB and with partners of IPB would continue to be developed and intensified in the future as a form of responsibility of IPB to the nation for the glory of the maritime of Indonesia. (Awl)
