Professor of Veterinary Medicine of Bogor Agricultural University (IPB), Prof.Dr.drh. Tuty Laswardi, said that Artificial Insemination (IB) technology had been known in Indonesia since 1954 and began to be applied en masse in cattle after being established the Hall of Artificial Insemination (BIB) and Regional BIB (BIBD) to produce and distribute the frozen cement throughout Indonesia.

The farm problem in Indonesia was so complex that affected the success of the IB program in support of the national meat self-sufficiency program that had not been achieved. Therefore, Prof. Tuty in the press conference of pre scientific oration of her professorship in Exlounge of Campus of IPB Baranangsiang, Bogor (30/8), offered the development strategy of IB technology so that the application could be achieved optimally.

“There are seven strategies that I have i.e. the improvement of technical aspects, the facilities and infrastructures, the BIB accreditation and certification of seed products, the feed management, health and cage system, the cement quality testing, the standardizaton of human resources in the BIB, the standard of implementation of IB in the field and the development of grasslands,” she said.

At this time Indonesia had had 2 BIB, i.e. BIB Lembang and BIB Singosari, and 13 BIBD. Control and evaluation systems toward various aspects of the overall IB technology in Indonesia were taken the role of the central government, the local government and the experts originating from universities/research institutes as well as related parties to do the management of IB. A study conducted by universities and research institutes might be one solution in order to fulfill the food needs of the animal protein from cattle and accelerated the development of farm sector.

“At this time in Indonesia there is an ongoing management program of the reproductive disorders (Gangrep) and the snapping lust and artificial insemination (GBIB) in cow and buffalo nationally. Cow and buffalo which are impaired of fertility will be addressed first and after being normal they will be in IB. The cows which are cyclical normal estrus will be synchronized their lusts and inseminated. Hopefully this program can be done seriously, directed and can provide input to the relevant agencies to be able to increase the population of cows and buffaloes in a relatively fast so that our dreams for the meat self-sufficiency can be achieved,” she explained.(zul)
