Indonesian Essential Oil Council (DAI) held a "Seminar on the Business Prospect of Indonesian Essential Oil", on Thursday (5/2) at the IPB International Convention Center (IICC), Bogor. DAI Chairman Dr. Meika Syahbana Rusli, also an IPB’s lecturer, said the essential oil business opportunity is still open. "Of the world’s 300 types of essential oils, only 40 Indonesian essential oils have been and are being developed," she said.

Further she said, It is a challenge for Indonesia to maintain the business opportunity and increase the market. "The world demand for clove oil is 5000-6000 tons per year, while Indonesia can only meet 4,500 tons per year. Currently, the total exports of Indonesian essential oil is about 120 million dollars per year," she added.

The potential essential oils of Indonesia include citronella, lemongrass, clove, eucalyptus, lime, patchouli, basil, ylang, vetiver, ginger, nutmeg, cubeb, black pepper, sandalwood, cinnamon, crocodile agarwood , and frankincense. The various industries using essential oils are the industries in flavor and fragrance, pharmacy, food, tobacco, aroma spa/aromatherapy, and insect pest control, most of which already exist in Indonesia.

Thus, added Dr. Meika, through DAI ii is expected that agribusiness and agro-industries of Indonesian essential oil can be improved and developed so as to improve the welfare of all stakeholders and the public.

The event was attended by researchers, entrepreneurs, farmers, refiners, traders and service industry, exporters, academics, observers and relevant government agencies related to essential oils, flavors, and fragrances. (Mtd)
