Serang Regency has a large coverage of coastal areas and small islands. It is recorded to have 17 islands at Banten Gulf and Sunda Strait in the working area of ??Banten Regency. Therefore, the Office of Marine, Fisheries, Energy and Mineral Resources (DKPESDM) of Serang in collaboration with the Scientific Diving Laboratory of the Department of Marine Science and Technology (ITK) of FPIK-IPB held a Diving Training on 21-23 October 2014 in Serang City and Tunda Island.

In this training the IPB team consists of Beginer Subhan, M.Si and Dondy Arafat and assistant Prakas Santoso, S.Ik as a team of instructors assisted by staff of DKPESDM of Serang Regency. Participants included representatives of SKPD related to DKPESDM activities.

Mumun Munawaroh, M.Sc of DKPESDM of Serang Regency told that the purpose of this activity is to introduce diving activities to the Regency officers from other Offices or Services. "The marine potential and diving activities in Serang are quite a lot. It is time for the government officials to begin to look at and to promote diving activities in this area," said Beginer Subhan, M.Si, Head of the Scientific Diving Laboratory of ITK-IPB.

Diving activities was initially viewed as less attractive. "At first I was not interested in taking this training," said one of the trainees from the Inspectorate Office of Serang. "But right now I feel really addicted, wanting to keep diving," he added. In Dondy Arafat’s observations, the participants turned out to have a lack of knowledge of diving, making them generally hesitant to try. And finally most could enjoy the sensation of floating in the sea column while looking at the beautiful coral reefs of Tunda Island. (Mtd)
