Careers of the Indonesian Librarians versus Librarians of the Developed Countries
Librarian career tracks in a number of developed countries are considered far better than those enjoyed by librarians in Indonesia. They were stated by Prof. Dr. Sulistyo Basuki, as the resource person, in the National Seminar on "Tuntutan Profesionalisme Pustakawan dalam Menyongsong AFTA 2015 (Professionalism of the Librarian Toward AFTA 2015)", on 14 October 2014, at the lobby of the University Library of Bogor Agricultural University (IPB), Dramaga, Campus Bogor.
Prof. Sulistyo said that the promotion of the librarians in developed countries such as the US, the UK, and Singapore simply are based on their job performances, achievements and works. By contrast, the status of the Indonesia Librarians is quite complicated. They should calculate the 0.0 percentage of all jobs they perform. "Moreover, the Indonesian librarians could not compare the total amount of the salary they earn with those earn by librarian of developed countries. This is due to the social, cultural, and economic factors, "said Prof. Sulistyo. Accordingly, he suggested that the Indonesian librarians must improve their professional performances, especially toward the implementation of ASEAN Free Trade Areas (AFTA) in 2015. Among other important things that librarians should learn is the English language skills. The seminar was officially opened by the Head of University Library of IPB, Ir Sumarlinah, MSI., and was participated by 105 participants. Other resource person invited for the national seminar was Dr. Onno Widodo Purbo, who presented details of "Digital Library Infrastructure". (Wied).
